Referring to Mr Hall's San Francisco mail line, the Sydney correspondent of the Argus says: — "The [A.S.N.J Company is quite ready to furnish new hoats for the line a3 soon as it can see its way definitely to a subsidy. Designs are being prepared for new boats of about 1500 tons burden, with engines on the compound principle. Such vessels, it is thought, will be more economical than the old Panama Company's boats, which, though oliered very cheap, are now five years old, and, at the rate of modern improvement, are getting antiquated. From all I can gather, there would be no objection on the part of the Company to make Melbourne the terminus of the line ; but it would require four boats to do the service, instead of three as at present, and the subsidy would have to be in proportion." A country correspondent writes to suggest that we should publish a summary of Parliamentary intelligence for the benefit of country readers, who are unable to see Hansard. In reply, we may state that, in addition to the telegraphic summary of the proceedings in Parliament published by us from week to week, the letters of our Wellington correspondent contain just such a digest as that indicated. These letters will be found to contain a concise account of the debates likely to interest Otago readers, for of course many debates take place that have no interest for readers in this province. To publish lengthy extracts from Hansard would exceed the space at our disposal, and would not as a rule be of general interest. We may add that up to the present time no Hansard has been received this session, owing to the strike in the Government Printing Qffiee.
