ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
i The monthly meeting of the Council of the Acclimatisation Society was held on Thursday —the President, Mr W. D. Murison, in the chair. It vu stated that the consignment of Californiau seeds had arrived, and that one half had been given to the Government. A sub-committee was appointed to distribute the remainder amongst members of the Society. Messrs Hepburn and Murison re* ported that all the trout had been distributed throughout the country, with the exception of those at Captain Boyd's pro- j I perty, and these had been placed in the ponds at the Botanic Gardens. A member said he had been informed that an hour after the sky -larks had been | turned out, two boys, who were known, were seen shooting in the same field in whioh they had been liberated. They shot a bird whioh they sold for a penny, but what kind of bird it was he could not learn. It was suggested \ that an application be made to the Secretary of the Education Board to have a notice posted in the various schools, warning bojf against the use of catapults. It was also stated that the Commissioner of Police had been spoken to with regard to the apprehension of boys guilty of shooting birds with these or other instruments. It was resolved to publish the regulations providing for the punishment of such offenders. It was decided that the partridges not yet set free should be sent to Waikouaiti, Oamaru, and the Clutha. The red deer are to be sent to Oamaru by the Wallace this morning. Votes of thanks were given to Caprain Wilson of the Warrior Queen, and Mr Paynter, ohief officer of the seme vessel, ! for their attention to the stock during the j voyage. The Society also recorded in their minutes their opinion as to the satisfactory manner in which Mr Bills had brought out this shipment.
