1871! we have compiled the subjoined static tics. The following table shows the amonnt oolleofced in eaoh province (Southland, for convenience of compariaon, being treated as a separate province throughout 1870) and the Chatham Islands, during the years 1869 and 1870, together with the inore&Be or decrease in the latter year : — Inoreas? ot Do18G9. 1870. creaseialß7o. * This is £34 less than the total as given in the first table above, the explanation being that thesa tables are compiled from the quarterly returns, and the re-tu-B from the Chatham Islands for the first qua T ter not haring beea received in time for publication along with the others, the amount appears only in the general total for the year. As already stated, also, tin return from the Chatham Islands for 6he la a t quarter of the y<>ar has not be n received. It will also be observed that a difference of £3 exists between fche totals for the whole colony la 1869, as given in the first an 4 third tables above. -We are unable to explain this discrepancy, whioh exists between the Seureapublisaed by tho Registrar- General in his annual volume of statistics, and those published in the Gazette of too 26ih January.
