THE HUNDREDS REGULATION BILL.
To the Editor of the Otago WrrNKsa.
Sir— Your readers are indebted to you for bo promptly furnishing thorn with the report of the debate 'md the divisions on the Hundreds Regulation Bill. The division hats are certainly very instructive. In order that the sides taken by our Otago Members may be distinctly noted by your readers, I request your insertion of the following ftbatraot of the four divisions whioh took place in Committee, aa reported in Hansard. 1 "No hundred to be proclaimed unless nt least half agricultural." Ayes : Cargill, j Driver, Maoandrew, Main, O'Neill, Reynolds, Vogel. Bell, Gmham. Noes : «radehaw, Ho worth, Mervyn. Absent : Birch, Burns, Haughton, Rioh. Kesu t of the division, Ay«a, 28 ; Noes, 13 ; majority for, 2 "That the maximum of compensation to runholdera be three shillings and sixpence Der aore, instead cf two shillings and sixponce "Ayes : OargiU. Graham, Maoaadrew, Main, 0' N eill, Vogel, B -11. , Driver. Noes : Bredshaw, Howorth. Mervyn, Reynolds. Absent ; Birch, Bums, Haughton, Bioh. Result of the divinion, Ayes, 16 j Noes, 24 ; majority against, 8. 3. •« That the maximum of compensation to be paid to runholder on surrendering lease of tho whole run be two shillinßS and sixpence per aore, and not one shilling ant sixpence per acre." The division was the same as formerly in so far as the Otago members were concerned. Result of division : Ayes, 19, Noes, 21 ; majority against, ,2. '4 •♦ Thnt clause two be recommitted." Ayos : Bradehaw, Howorth, Mervyn. Noes: ftrcilt, Graham, Mseandrew, 0 Neil, Reynolds, Vogel, Bell, Driv«r. Absent, Birch, Burns, H»uihton, Main, Rich. Result : Ayes, 13, Noes, 28; majority against, 15. it thus appears that in both cnaea the lower rates of maximum compensation were onrriccl by the aid of membra of other pro. vinces ; a majority of the Otago memhers having voted for the higher rates. Thoje gentlemen have all along acted perfectly conaietently in rogard to tho land queation, *nd their oonduot oo tho preaent occasion ih only wh»t miuht have been expected. Bnt how can Mr Nfucamlrow reconcile hia recent conduct with his former professions ?— I am, . INQtriRBR.
