Wiseman, asking' permission to cross footpath' opposite' Wesleyan Church. Mr Wiseman's letter was referred to the Public jOommittee. ' t • KEROSENE STORE. The report of the 'committee appointed' to find an .eligible place for a kerosene store, was, by consent,, postponed till ; next meeting. ■PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE. The Mayor said it was time now to appoint the different committees. The first would be the Works Committee. Mr Miller asked whether the Council was a legal body or not. Be did not think they were, from appendices having been attached to the Roll after it was printed. He had taken legal opinion in the matter, and considered he ■ should not' take any part as a committee man. '

The Mayor said a certain section of the Ordinance put the whole to rights, and that the Council was a legal body. Mr Farnib : If Mr Miller is of opinion the Council is not legally constituted, let him try the question, as he has plenty of caah.

Messrs Clark, Innes, and Law, having been proposed and seconded as the members of the Public Works Committee, were duly elected.

FINANCE COMMITTEE.

Messrs Farnie, M'Kinnon, &nd Dr O'Donoghue were appointed, a Finance Committee.

RESERVE* COMMITTEE.

Messrs Dodson, Clark, Law, and Dr O'DonoKhun were elected a Committee for the Reserves.

BYE-LAWS.

On the motion of Mr Farnie, seconded! by Mr Clark, a Committee of the whole Council was appointed to draw up byelaws and standing orders, and report at next meeting.

GOVEKNMENT BUBBIDT.

The Mayor understood that nearly all the rates were coll oo tod, and would leave it to the Council whether they should apply for the Government subsidy or not./ The Town Clerk »aid that only about L 5 had not been paid. Mr Farnib proposed, and Mr M'Knr nojt seconded, that tho subsidy bo applied for nt once. After discussion, this was carried.
