LAWRENCE.

(FROM OUR OWN C'ORRKSrONDEKT.) August 12.

Our municipal elections being over, we are returning to the ordinary routino of daily duties. Tho roturn of Mr Bastings again as Mayor has not on'.y given satisfaction, but is looked upon as a pledge that the beat interests of tho 'ownnhip will be vigorously promoted. The three now councillors who succeed the retiring oites are Messrs Coverlid, Honry, and Harrop, and, as they aw all "now blood," we may hopo for n little moro activity than has distinguished their predecessors. I notice our escort (U22ozn) still pincea Tunpoka at tho head of tho gold-producing districts. Morrison and Company and Hailes and Company, havo lately washed up, but I cannot give particulars, as they aro both private companios, and their claims are not in tho market. However, they have netted very handnnmo returns. I have visited the Hospital sovcnvl timoii latoly, and find during tho current month a great increase in tho numbor of patients, both resident and outdoor. I am sorry to »cc that James Thomson, who wm M?w«ly wounded ftt tho Bluo Spur

u whae>ttempting iodtfrf Jd^.i^tjbad, ftiasddflre;, and whose arm was^mputated s , Kaa entirely lost jttte aignt of both eyes, 'tfh'e ' 'man/ Mfldrie, V^oiia you mentioned as having .'sustained a fracture of "the leg last week, is doiner well. His Honour, Judge Wilson Gray has been holding a District Court, biit there were only three cases for trial. The only important case was, the Trustees of the Congregational Church V. R. Fowler, a claim of L 92 for rent. Thin was a case in' which Mr Fowler, a blacksmith, had in 1862, erected ,a smith's shop on a section in trust to Messrs Parry and Tolcher. In 1864, the Trustees sent in a demand for LlO nominal rent, with an intimation that in future the rent would be at the rate of LI per week. His Honour, after taking the evidence of the Corporation assessor (Mr Hay), and the ToVh Clerk (Mr Hayes), gave judgment for 2a 6d per week from the date of the letter of 1864, which amounted to L 29 15b. I notice there has been a great political meeting at Tokomairiro, regarding the passing of the Otago Hundreds Regulation Bill, and I can assure you before long the voice of this district will be heard echoing the sentiments so eloquently advocated by Mr Gillies on Monday evening. The improvements in Ross place are steadily progressing, and soon drays will be able to pass along the chief street of our township. Two bridges are in course of erection to allow of the waters of the the creek passing Wow, instead of above the level of the road. Another improvement worthy of notice is the erection of the Black Horse Brewery, by the firm of Messrs Bastings and Kofoed, at Wether- j stones. This is a substantial brick and stone building, with all the appliances for producing a first-rate article. The Junction Family Hotel was disposed of last week by auction. The purchaser, Mr Roberts, intends removing it to the corner of Peel street.

The weather, during the past few days, has been inclement. This morning two inches of snow were lying on the ground j and a messenger despatched to Grant's station had to return on account of the depth of the snow, which totally obscured the track, and, though an old mailman, he had to pass the night on the ranges.
