ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

A special meeting of the Acclimatisation' Society was held on Tuesday last at tho Athenteum. The President, Mr W. D. Murison, occupied the chair, and there were also present Captain Boyd, Messrs R. Oliver, and E. M'Glaahan.

YOUNG TROUT AND PHEASANTS.

Mr G. P. Clifford, the manager, stated that sixty-one young trout had been successfully deposited in the - head waters of the Waikouaiti ; he also reported the death of two cock pheasants.

SUBSCRIPTIONS.

Mr Clifford next pointed out the necessity .of the outstanding subscriptions being collected without delay, j Captain Boyd moved that. Mr Sydney James be appointed to collect them. The motion was carried.

TROUT OVA FROM TASaTAITCA.

The Chaibman stated that he had received a letter, 1 dated 23rd May, from Mr Morton Allport, of Tasmania, who, writing on behalf of the Salmon Commissioners, offered to furnish the Society with trout ova. The meeting had been convened chiefly to consider the advisability of despatching Mr Clifford to Tasmania, by the Alhambra, whioh was to sail on Saturday next, to bring over a quantity of ova for the Society. If Mr Clifford were despatched at once, he would not be a day too soon. On the day previous, he saw the Hon. Mr Nurse, who expressed an opinion that, in consequence of the expense involved, it was probable that the Southland Society would not send their curator to Tasmania, and it was suggested that Mr Clifford might get a supply of ova on their behalf. He (Mr Murison) and Mr Oarriok consulted together, and after learning that Mr Clifford saw no difficulty, he told Mr Nurse that could oasily be arranged. Mr Oliver asked if the Southland Society were willing to pay a portion of the expenses connected with Mr Clifford's journey. The Chairman said the Southland Society would pay any extra expense to whioh Mr Clifford might ba put in obtaining a supply of ova for them. Mr Oliver suggested that there would be little extra expense, but said he did not see why they should not pay some part of the expense. The Chairman said he did not think that that Society could afford to contribute. He thought they would do well to render all tho assistance they could in tho matter of acclimatisation. Mr Oliver was also of that opinion, but •till considered that if a Sooiety in such a case did not plead poverty thoy nhonld be expooted to pay part of the expense. Uudor the oircumstanccfl, however, ho had not tho •lightest objection to propose or second a resolution giving offect to tho suggestion oonveyod by tho romarks of tho Chairman. After some farther discussion, it was decidod that Mr Clifford should proceod to Tasmania on Saturday. On tho motion of Oapt, Boyd, it wws agreed that Mr Clifford. wh«n in Tasmania, be anthorisod to obtain, if powiblo, a supply of the trout ova for the Southland Society.
