RIFLE MATCHES.
The first Company Rifle Match of the season took place last week between the No. 6 Company, Christchurch Rifles, and the Dunedin Artillery. The conditions were — Ten men on each side to fire on their respective ranges, on any day during the third week of this month ; distance, 2UO, 500, and 600 yards ; seven shots at each ; Wimbledon targets ; Government rifles and ammunition ; Hythe position at 200, and any position at ! 500 and 600 yards. The Christchurch men fired on Thursday last, and the Artillery on Friday, the result being a victory to the latter by a majority of 40 pointß. The finest shooting in the match was that of Gunner Cato, who made the splendid score of 70, composed of 2i at 2UO yards, 23 at 500 yards, and 25 at 600 yards. At the latter range he made five bull's eyes and two centres in his seven shots. The next highest score wag made by Sergeant Eule. Christchurch, who scored a total of 66 points. Considering that the i season has bat just commenced, so that the I teams have had very little practice, fair ! scores were made, and the match wa3 well contested. The Artillerymen were the winners by a majority of 16 points. The conditions were — Ranges, 200. 500. aud 600 yards, 5 shots at each ; Wimbledon targets ; standing at 200, and any position at 500 and 600 ; Government rifles.
