DUNSTAN.

(prom ottb own correspondent.)

Clyde, 19th September.

A miner named Stewart met with a severe accident, while out riding, on Sunday evening last.- His collar-bone was broken in two places, and he was otherwise injured. The poor fellow was found lying on the roadside senseless, and covered with blood, and wag taken at ence to the Dunstan Hospital, where, under the care of Dr. Shaw, he is progressing favorably.

A statement in my last letter respecting the daily yield from the Frenchman claim, at Alexandra, should have read " one hundred ounces per day," instead of " one thousand." I think, however, that the lucky owners of the claim are the only parties who regret that the account published was not a reality instead of a fiction.

In Municipal matters there is nothing exciting to chronicle. The Councils at Clyde, Cromwell, and Alexandra are pushing on the interests of their respective Municipalities. The ratepayers seem satisfied, and " dub up" without much grumbling. I think, however, that a reduction in the rates might be made, as the streets are all in good order, and likely to remain so for a long time to come. The traffic through them is not large enough to do any great amount of injury to the works already constructed. The salaries of the Town Clerks and Inspectors of Nuisances have been reduced since the last elections, and there really appears no good reason why the ratepayers should not find things a little easier. {Sixpence in the pound* ought to be amply sufficient for all municipal purposes, considering that that amount is liberally subsidised by the Provincial Government.

Mrs Robert Finlay, the lady of Mr Robert Finlay, the nrack-respeeted Mayor of Alexandra, is to be presented with a miniature silver cradle, in commemoration of her having presented her lord with twins during the third year of his Mayoralty.

Mr William Jackson Barry, the late Mayor of Cromwell, is leaving the district, having disposed of his premises to Messrs Hallenstein and Co., of Queenfctown, who are opening a branch establishment at Cromwell. Mr Barry, it is said, intends trying the Arrow.

There seems very little business for the District Courts. On Monday last there was only one case for hearing, and that was an appeal from a decision of Mr "Warden Robinson, given at Blacks on the 21st of August last. The case, which seemed a very intricate one, was heard at considerable length ; but His Honour Mr Wilson Gray reserved his judgment.

On Tuesday last, the District Coroner, Vincent Pyke, Esq , held an inquest at the Falcon Hotel, Cromwell Road, upon the body of a mau named Ah King, who was found dead in hiß tent, near the Molyneux. Deceased was apparently about fifty years of years. Two Chinamen, and a man named Black, discovered the deceased lying dead in his tent, and at once gave the necessary information to the police. Upon his person was found the sum of Ll4 13s 6d. A post

mortem examination was made by Dr Shaw, who found that death had resulted from inflammation of the brain. The jury returned a verdict accordingly.

The Clyde Town Council have decided to apply to the Provincial Government for professional assistance in making a survey for a water-race, to carry one hundred heads of water, from the Lindis Hiver to the Dunstan Flat. The construction of such a waterrace would, without doubt, prove one of the best investments in the country ; the water could all be let out to mining parties for generations to come, the Lindis being of sufficient elevation to operate upon hundreds of square miles of auriferous country. A special meeting of the Town Council was held on Saturday last, to take into consideration the removal of the Clerk of the Court fromCJyde. After & lengthy discussion, it was resolved, "That a/leputation, consisting of Councillors Feraud and Hastie, proceed at once to Dunedin and wait on His Honour the Superintendent, praying that the proposed removal of the Clerk of the Court be not carried out, as great loss would be entailed on all olasses of the people." The deputation have arranged to start on their mission at once, therefore they are expected to wait on His Honour on Wednesday or Thursday next.
