September 9th.

The Wanganui Times just received by the Sturt says: — " On Monday our forces left Waihi at 4 a.m., and at 2 p.m. encountered the enemy again at Te Ngutu o te Manu, but this time they were thoroughly prepared to give us a warm reception. Not only were the rifle pits manned, but also the tops of the trees, and deadly volleys were poured in upon our men, who bravely pushed forward, cheered on by their officers, and returned the fire with murderous effect. " Twenty-seven Maoris bit the ground. How many of them are wounded we cannot say. 11 Our forces retired in good order, and were preparing for another attack. "Most of our officers and men who were killed were shot by Hauhaus perched on the tops of trees. " The Colony will grieve to hear that Major Yon Tempsky is dead, but, he nobly fell in battle. The brave Captain Buck, and his equally brave fellowofficers, Captain Palmer, Lieutenant Hastings, and Lieutenant Hunter, are all amongst the killed. " Lieutenant Rowan has been dangerously wounded. " The names of the 14 men killed are not recorded in the brief intelligence to hand."

Last night was principally occupied in preventing the discussion on the Government finance resolutions being taken in advance of those tabled for to-night by Mr Fox. The Government finally gave "way.

Mr Fox is now moving, as an amendment, simply 'That this House has no confidence in the policy of the Government.'

A brief despatch from Colonel McDonnell only reports 'Severe engagement,' giving no particulars relative to the object or strength of the expedition.

There are 14 killed, besides officers, and 24 wounded.

Sir George Grey embarked on board the Mat aura at 5 o'clock, under a salute of artillery.
