THE DUNSTAN.
The latest report from Mr Keddell, the Warden of the Dunstau Gold Fields, for the week ending January 31st, gives the population as follows : — Dunstan proper, inclusive of ") Eanisleusrh, Conroy's, Meredith's, andY other outlying Gullies- - - j 2,200 Holders of bu'-ine-s licences, and others not ) engaged in mining pursuits - - J 1,500
No new discoveries reported within the district. The workings on the Nevis are progressing according to report, and the prospectors speak favoiably.
The lliver Clutha, which last week promised in a few days to be at a level favorable for working the registered claims, rose ia one night (Tuesday) as high as it has heretofore been, and has since remained high. This circumstance has dispirited many who had began, ag they believed their autumnal and winter workings, and has checked the impetus given to to the tr.ide of the District by the previous low state of the river. The claims at the Mamiherikia are repaying the large company who turned the river. From the nature of the business of the Warden's office and inquiries of many of those frequenting it, I believe that a great number of new Victorian miners have arrived during the week.
