WAKARI DISTRICT.

A meeting of the owners and occupiers of land and leaseholders vms held in the School-room on Monday. In spite of the boisterous night, the attendance was numerous and punctual. On the motion of Mr. Hepburn, seconded by Mr. Hood, Mr. vShanktj took the chair, and requested Mr. Johnston to read the clauses of the Education Bill (the ordinance not being printed), in accordance with which the meeting had been called by Mr. Hislop. Mr. Hepburn reported the proceedings of the late committee, and congratulated the District on the increased attendance at the School, and the comfortable state of the School building, which might now be considered complete, unless the increasing number of scholars should necessitate an enlargement of the Schoolroom. A statement from the Treasurer's books was also submitted, showing a balance of a few shillings against the committee.

Mr. Kilgour congratulated the meeting on the state of matters, and requested to be allowed to wipe off the balance against the committee. A iengthened conversation then took place in regard to the mode of raising the district's portion of the Teacher's salary under the new ordinance. All the speakers agreed that assessment was the most unexceptionable mode; but regret, ted that it would entail considerable expense. The result of , the conversation was a unanimous recommendation to the committee to levy an assessment for the sum necessary to nay the Teacher's salary. The meeting then proceeded to elect a School committee for the district, when the following gentlemen were declared to have the highest number of votes : — Messrs. Shanka,* Hepburn,* Ross, Werner, Kilgour, Hood,* Cunningham,* Johnston,* and Laing. Those marked * were reelected.
