OBITUARY.
The following names are the mo&t prominent on the ■ ouituary of the present month of sorrow :—: — The Dov.n^er Countess Grey, widow of the late harl Grey, died after a short illness at her residence in London, on the evening of the 2Gth ult. in the SGtli year of her age. At Edinburgh, on the 27th ult., died the Lady Robert Kerr. J Sir Peter Laurie, the oldest member of the Court of Aldermen, died on the 3rd mat., at the advanced age of eighty years. General Alexander Armstrong, almost the oldest General in the army, died at Bath on the 3id instant at the advanced age of ninety-five years. ' Countess Canning, the wifeof the Governor-General of India, died at Calcutta on the lSth ult. She was the eldest daughter of the late Lord Stuart de Bothf ay, G.C. U., and at the time of her death was in her 44th year. Lord Riversdale, Bishop of Killaloe, died on tho 14th, in the 7 tin year of his age. Principal Cunningham, one of the most acute and powerful minds in Scotland, died on tho 15th, in his sCth year. ' On the 14th instant Mr. E,dward Barnard, one of Her Majesty s agents for Crown colonies, died suddenly of apoplexy in his 70th year. Dr. Southwood Smith, the eminent Physician and tho father of sanitary reform, died at Florence on the 10th, in his 78rd year. Fiianck Stepping in betwken England and the TJnitkd States. — Rumors arc in circulation to the effect that the Government had sent a note to Russia, Prussia, and Austria, suggesting a common action of the great powers between England and America. More Demands of ENGiANix—The passengers by the Asia also say that the surrender of Mason and slidell will not be the whole of what England will demand.
