TOWN BOARD.

The first meeting of the Town Board since the annual election was held on Monday. PresentAll the members except Mr. Mollison. Mr. Switzer in the chair.

Mr. Kilgour was re-appointcl Treasurer. A letter was read from the Superintoiu'ent, enclosing a letter from the Commissioner of Police, on^the subject of the appointment of an Inspector of Nuisances, and making provision for bis salary. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Cargill, seconded by Mr. Shand, " that having read the Superintendent's letter, and the enclosure fiom Mr. Branigan, applying for the salary of tin Inspector of Nuisances, to be appointed by the (iovernment ; resolved, that as the Dunedin Town Board has no power vested in it to meet such a ease they regret being unable to comply with the request."

_ The Clerk then read a latter from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, consenting to the use of a portion of the Town Belt as a manure depot, and requesting the Board to erect a bridge and form a road to it. Considerable discussion took place as to whether the Board had any power over the Belt ; and as none of the members seemed exactly to know what the powers of the Board were, it was resolved that a Committee, consisting of Messrs. Shand, Switzer, Jenkinson, and Graham be appointed to confer with the Government as to the forniiition of a manure depot on the Town Belt : the Committee to report to the next meeting of the Board. — An application from Mr. If. Calder for leave to put a side drain into the Highstreet sewer, was granted.

A letter from the Superintendent, acknowledging receipt of an application from the Board to the Government for the -preparation of a Building Act, and intimating that the Government intended to introduce such an Act at the next session of the Provincial Council, was read, as well as another letter acknowledging receipt of an application for reserves for water-closets within the town.

A letter from Mr. E. Casper, requesting a reconsideration of the Board's former resolution on an application for the formation of Hope-street, having been read, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Hardy, " That the Board adhere to its former resolution."

Mr. Graham moved—" That the Clerk be instructed to request the Government to take steps at the earliest possible period to have the town resurveyed, and pegs put in at the corners of all the streets," — which was agreed to. An application from Messrs. Stevenson and Oughton^ joint lessees of a municipal section in the Taieri, to be allowed to divide the section and have two distinct leases, was granted on condition of their paying all expenses. _ A notice of motion as to rescinding of resolution requiring payment of bonus of £50 on transfer of lease of section 3, Block XX, Waihola, was lost, and the former resolution was confirmed.

An application from Wm. Sims, for the transfer of a ten-acre section to Mr. Fuller, was granted on payment of a bonus of £5.

l)r. llulme moved, and Mr. Kilgour seconded — " That the Clerk be instructed to employ labour on Princes-street to keep the water-courses and street free of dirt, and also to procure six patent road-scrapers, and to remove the mud." Agreed to.

Several Accounts were then passed, and the Board adjourned till the following Monday.
