Local Intelligence. EAST TAIERI.
THE SOPERtNTENDENCY. A meeting of the settlers in the Taieri district'was held in the School-room, East Taieri, on the evening of Thursday, the 11th inst., to consider who should be elected to tti? &ffi^6'of
Superintendent of the Province. There were between 30 and 40 persons presentj the majority of Av.hom appeared to be boys and non-electors, .. A. J. Burns, Esq. having been elected Chairman, he read the advertisement calling ' the ' meeting, and invited those present to express their views on the subject respecting whichthey had been called together. * Ar Mr. Wm. Biaset moved, " Thatthis meeting considers Mr. James Macandrew a fit and pro- " per person for the office of Superintendent." This resolution was seconded by Mr. Alex. Mackay, who immediately afterwards rose and ' proposed " That this meeting considers Mr. - John Jones of Watkouaiti a proper person for ' the office oi Superintendent." Mr. John Allan, "- senior, seconded Mr. Mackay's motion. • ' No other resolution having been proposed, the chairman called for a show of hands in favour of the respective motions, when 5 hands were held up in favour of Mr. Bisset's resolu- ■ tion, and 2 for Mr. Mackay's. The persons who voted for Mr. Macandrew were Messrs. W. Bisset, A. Mackay, John Grow, G-. Couper, and A. Chirnside, junior; Mr. Jones's sup- - porters were Messrs. Alex. Mackay and John • Allan, senior. The proceedings did not occupy more than 15 minutes, and seemed tc be considered by many present as partaking somewhat " of the nature of a. farce. We understand that the reasons given by several of Major Richardson's supporters for not attending the meeting, or for not taking part in the proceedings, are — that any further - public discussion of the subject is rendered unnecessary by its being generally understood that no opposition is to be offered to the Major's' election, — and that, as the meeting at feast Taieri could not be held as in any degree representing the great body of the Taieri electors, it was quite unnecessary to cause Major Richardson's honourable name to be placed '~ alongside the names of two persons so utterly ineligible as those proposed. . - .
