The want of a journal specially devoted to the promotion of the interests of the nunierous'settlements now rapidly rising into imp6rtance in the extensive portion of the Southern .Island of New Zealand bounded by Foveaux Straits, and now forming part of the Province .of Otago, has long been felt. That want is ahout to be supplied by the publication of a Newspaper under the above title. It will be issued in the first instance once a fortnight, but weekly as soon as the necessary typographical arrangements can be made. The Settlements more immediately comprehended within the circulation of the Southern News will be InvcrcarcUll (New River,) Riverton (Jacob's River,) CampbetXtown (the Bluff,) Halfway Busn, the Mataura, and in addition, the rich pastoral country extending inland from those places. One leading object of the conductors of the Southern News will be to furnish as much district intelligence as possible ; and with this view, .they invite the co-operation of subscribers in the several localities ; all communications to be prepaid, and to he authenticated, privately, by the real signatures of the writers. Statistical information, i. c., as to the number of settlers or population in each district ; the state of roads and bridges ; the number of sheep, cattle, and horses ; the extent of land under cultivation, and how cropped ; the existing provision, or want of provision, for education and for public worship, &c, will be especially welcome,' as such fadts and figures wiirform a most useful starting-point for the future history of this most important section of the Colony of New Zealand. Terms of Subscription: — While the paper is issued fortnightly, at the rate of 13s. per annum ; when issued weekly, 265. per annum, — payable in advance. Advertisements, 3d. per line. Orders for advertisements to state the number of insertions, and to be accompanied by a remittance, or by an order on some mercantile firm, or on one of the Banks (the Union and the Oriental) in Invercargill. Printed and published by George Smaixfield, Tay-street, Invercargill. Agent for Dunedin, Mr. W. Lambert, Colonist Office, by whom names of subscribers and orders for advertisements will be received.
