To the Electors of the County of Wallace. f^ ENTLEMEN,— I had hoped to have vT been able, ere this, to thank you in' person for the honour you have done me in returning me for the County without a contest. Unknown as I am to nearly all of you, except by such good or evil report as may exist of the public conduct of a man who has takuu a part in New Zealand affairs for 20 years ; and having in no way sought your suffrages or interfei'ed in the election ; I feel I may justly regard my return, (especially when a candidate more immediately connected , with the district was at one time in the field), not merely in the light of a personal distinction, but as a mark of your confidence that the duties you have imposed on me will be discharged, to the be«t of my ability, with a sincere desire for the public good, with an honestpurpose, and in a fair spirit. It is still my purpose to meet you before the Session, and to learn from yourselves what are your wants, and how the interests <»f ' the country may best be promoted by me. Till then, I refrain from any discussion of the subjects likely to come before the Assembly. I am, Gentlemen, Your faithful and obliged Servant, FRANCIS DILLON BELL. TO THE ELECTORS OF . THE DUNEDIN COUNTRY DISTRICT. GENTLEMEN— I BEG to oifer myself as a Candidate for the honour of representing you in the General Assembly. * m A rP"Sflenop nf upwards of «gvot\ years iv this Province, during part of that time as a country settler and more recently in the exercise of my profession in Dunedin, has afforded me ample opportunities of becoming acquainted with the capabilities and requirements of the Province, and with the opinions and feelings of my fellow-colonists. The general legislation and management of the affairs of the whole Colony have also had from time to time my careful consideration. On the subject of the New Provinces Act I believe I express your almost unanimous opinion when I state that I consider that Act to be unjust in principle, mischevious in practice, and that it ought at once to be repealed. On other questions which may come before the Assembly — such as the Boundary dispute, the Amendment of the Laws relating, to the transfer of Real Property and Registf ation of Titles, the Licensing Laws, the Bankruptcy Laws, the Separation of the Northern from the Middle Island, &c. — I shall have an opportunity of stating my views to you personally. If you do me the honour of electing me, I shall endeavour to promote the interests not only of this Province but of the whole Colony — judging every measure on its own merits, independent of personal or party feelings. I am, Gentlemen, Your most obedient Servant, THOMAS B. GILLIES. Dunedin, 23rd February 18G0.
