CENSUS OF THE COLONY OF NEW ZEALAND, 1858.

Mr. Smith complained that several parties who had fenced in street lines, had still ne- '. glected to comply with the request of the i Board to remove them. i The Clerk stated that the parties alluded to had promised to remove the fences within the specified time. - < On the motion of j\lr. Dick, it was agreed to employ the surface men upon George street i until the lev.els of Stafford street were obtained. The following letter, addressed to the chairman of the Board, from .Messrs. Young & Co., agents'foV. the London and Liver/pool Fire and Life Insurance Company, was read :—: — ''^'<" I* . ' Dunedin, July 6, 1859. STp,— As agents for the Otago branch of the Liverpool,, and London Fire and Life Instance Compai\y,-we beg to inform you that we have had a correspondence with the head office at Sydney on the subject of a fire engine and apparatus for the service of this town, and we are happy to sate that we hava received advice from the Secretary of his intention' to fonvaid the needful appliances by the first opportunity. The following is an extract from his letter, dated Sydney, June 9 :—: — ." I shall by an early eligible opportunity forward an engine to you, together with a fire alarm bell of sufficient power to awaken ail the inhabifa'rttK of Dunedin in the event of a fue, and I have no doubt but that you will experience no difficulty in getting the authorities to allow you to place it on an elevated and central position. As this Company finds the engine, the public should find the means to prect an engine -house* &c. The public should also contribute jointly with the Insuiauce Companies to the maintenance of the engine in efficient order. I enclose you a copy of the rules and regulations of the Volunteer Fire Brigade No 2 established in this city, which may perhaps a3si.it you in your endeatoui s to introduce a system into tbe'worlnng of the brigade which is so abso'utely necessary to its proper efficiency. The engine might be LENT to the btigade, and handed over to their charge, subject to your inspection from time to time, to satisfy yourselves, as the ostensible owners, that it and all the implements belonging to it are kept in proper and efficient woikins; order. I think that one or two days should be fixed for en- | glue practice by the brigade in each month, which would" tend to increase the efficiency of the biigade, and test that of the engine, hose, &c." We shall be obliged if you will bring this matter before the -consideration of the Board at an early opportunity, and confidently hope that on a question of such vital importance to the general interests of the town, they will be prepared to act at once upon the suggestions of the Secretary to the Company, so that every precaution may be used to protect the public property in the event of such a calamity occurring, as a fire. It may be well to state here, that no property can be insured for its full value ; therefore the insured portion of the public are mutually interested v:ith th<? Company in any provision for their joiut protection,; and in cases of uninsured property such provision would be wholly for tha public benefit. It only__remains for us to add, that as agents for the Company we shall be most happy to give any further information that may be lequtred by the Board, and to co-operate with them at all times in themanagement of a fire brigade system, which we shall be glad to see organized at once. We 'enclose a copy of the rules of the Sydney Fire Brigade, refeired to in the Secietarj's letter." We are, sir, yours, &c, W. C. Young and Co., Agents to the Company. After a short discussion, daring which the Board "expressed their great satisfaction with tfie importance of the proposea movement, the fo]lo\vi2)g resolution, moved hy Mr. Dick and seconded by Mr. Lambert, was heartily agreed td :—: — ''•Thsft the-iJlerk write to Messrs. Young and Co. tlfat 'th,e Board" has , received with satisfaction the proposal of the Agents of the London and Liverpool Fire Insurance Company and will co-operate ! in so far as possible in every means for the protec- I tion of the Town from fue, by the formation of a ! Fire Brigade or otherwise." j The consideration of the subjects as to the \ formation of a fire brigade and the supplying Dunedin with water was postponed till next meeting. The Clerk was instructed to write to the ' Superintendent respectfully requesting that j his Honor would direct the crown grants for the municipal property to be completed. The. Board then adjourned.
