BRITISH FILM REBUFF TO CHAPLIN.
(Sun Special). *. LONDON, Friday. Charlie Chaplin’s triumphal procession uas received a severe cheek by the decision of the Gaumont Corporation, which controls 320 einemas, including some, of the most important in London and the provinces, not to screen “City Lights,’’ in view of the exacting terms required by Chaplin. , Chaplin refused an offer of 33 1-3 per cent, of the receipts and demanded 50 per cent. It is estimated that i by the decision Chaplin will lose £IOO,I 000. Critics say that the terms of 1 agreement demanded l>y Chaplin would have enabled him to have held British einemadom to ransom. The “Daily Telegraph’s’’ film correspondent recalls that for 20 years Chaplin was in California, and did not' respond to invitations to assist British films. The proprietors now feel that he has taken sufficient money from England.
