BIBLE SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING. The eighth annual meeting of the Otaki branch of the British add Foreign Bible Society was held at the residence of the president, Mrs. Wills, on Wednesday, loth inst. There was a good attendance. The Rev. G. K. Moir was iu the chair and the meeting opened with the singing of the hymn “Thou Whoso Almighty Word,” after which Mr. Moir led in prayer. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdnmes Moir. Spencer, Swabey, Taylor, Stephenson and the Rev. H. Spencer. Before calling upon the secretary for the minutes of the last meeting. Mr. Moir said that he was sure that his views with regard to the work of the British and Foreign Bible Society were too well known to need repetition there. On behalf of those' present ho wished to extend a hearty welcome to Mrs. Porter who was present to report upon the Society’s recent achievements. .The minutes were then read and confirmed and the annual report duly received and adopted. The report showed that the subscriptions received from - Bible Society friends throughout Otaki and district amounted to £:’,.T Os JOd. an increase of £4 Os -Id upon the amount subscribed in 19l!$. The visit of the Dominion Secretary in July of last, year had been greatly appreciated. An inspiring address at the annual meeting as well as a successful public meeting had proved a great, stimulus to the work. The report concluded with a warm expression of appreciation of the willing assistance given by the collectors and of the loyal support of sub, seribers. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—l'resident, .Mrs. Wills (re-elected); vice-presi-dents, Mesdnmes Moir, Spencer, Patching. Swabey, Booth. Critchlo.v, .Miss Lee (all re-elected), and Mrs: Lethbridge, sen.; lion, secretary and treasuref. Miss L. Grant <re-elected). The following ladies kindly offered to form the collecting committee this year: — Mesdanics Cobb. Critchley. Davidson, Tu liana, .Misses Taylor, Kenworthy and Grant. Decided that collectors meet at the College on the Pit It September to hand in subscriptions received. The meeting then adjourned for u social half-hour, the president entertain "8 ■'ll! present at a delightful afternoon tea. The Organising Secretary. Mrs. Porter, was then culled upon to address the meeting. Mrs. Porter thanked them for their warm welcome. On behalf of the Bible Society she wished to extend heartiest congratulations upon the success of the 1929 effort. The results spoke volumes for the loyally o! both collectors and subscribers: and had been it source of great encouragement to the Bible House staff. She wottl.l like to thank their president, Mrs. Wills, for enabling them to hold the annual meetings under such ideal conditions. A hearty vote of thunks was accorded to Mrs. Wills and carried by acclamation.

Miss Lee paid a tribute to the work of the Bible Society in New Zealand with special reference to this district. A prompt and generous response was always forthcoming from the Dominion Secretary (Rev. D. Calder). Miss Lee rsatd that she did not think that the public fully realised that the Society was as eager to seize even- opportunity to circulate the .Scriptures in our land as it was to meet the needs of the Ohnstijin Chunli overseas.
