A wbare at Waiorongomai is said to have been burglariously entered, and the local police are making enquiries. Two aeroplanes passed over Otaki yesterday morning, returning south during the afternoon.

On account of the rain at the weekend rivers and streams in this district were considerably swollen.

Young men, strangers to the district, got into grips in the vicinity of Otaki on Friday night and for a time there was a general “cleau-up. ” Unfortunately, females were also implicated.

Two motor-cars came into violent collision between Waikanae and To Horo on Saturday night. Both cars were considerably damaged but, luckily, the occupants escaped injury.

The .funeral of the late Mrs. Cootes took place on Friday afternoon at the Otaki Native cemetery, the liev. Temuera Tokoaituu conducting the ceremony. There was a large following of Natives and Europeans, and several floral tributes were placed on the coffin.

A dance will be held at Manakau on the 19th September, when occasion will he taken to make a presentation to Mr. Cliff Porter (for two year.captain of the Hui Mai Clubl on the occasion of his retirement from big football. Mr. A. K. (Bert) Cooke will badly be ■' present. Qeorges’ full orchestra (the same as provided music for the bowlers’ ball) has been engaged for the occasion.

A pleasing function took place at Manakau on Friday afternoon, when the Rev. D. Calder, Dominion Secretary for the British and Foreign Bible Society, met and welcomed the children who are now formed into a Junior Branch, under the name of the .Manakau Sunbeams. For some months, weekly meetings have been held wit it the children, with an attendance of from IS to 2) of all ages. Proceedings were begun on Friday by the Rev. Mr, Spencer, leading in prayer. Then the children sang three Sunbeam hymns. The Rev. Mr. Moir read the two firstchapters of the Book of ltutli, four of the girls reciting the words of the leading characters. The programme was brought to a close with the story of Mary Jones and her Bible. Miss Lee told the story, while Ena .Cowan, dressed as a Welsh child of TOO years ago, illustrated the various episodes. Then Mr. Calder spoke, first to the .grown ups, of whom a goodly number were present, and later to the Sunbeams. A delicious afternoon tea was enjoyed, the waiting deftly undertaken by the children.

Tenders are invited for road, work at PI tmmer ton. A. notice to trespassers appears iu this issue. A dance will be held at Rikioraag: Oil Friday night. A tennis dance will be held at Te Horo on August 29th. Euchre and a dance will be held at the Parish Hall this, evening. A dance will be held at Rikiorangi on Friday evening. Mr. A. The Haulers Rifle Club give notice of a series of dances, etc., which are to commence on Wednesday evening. An auction sale of furniture, etc., will be held at the Otaki mart on Friday. The .Sunbeam bus will run to the Rikiorangi dance on Friday free of charge. A series of six fortnightly euchre parties, with" a good points prize, and a dance, will be held at Haul ere on Wednesday night.
