SPORTING.

AT DUNEDIN TO-MORROW.

rmST DAY’S PROSPECTS. (By L.M.M.) Wellington, This Day. The Dunedin winter meeting opens to-morrow. The Wingatui track.is according to latest information rather on the soft side and may prove a little difficult for some of the top-weights. The fields are large and oh the whole a rrood dav’s - racing can be expected. Horses that can he regarded as likely winners to-morrow in their respective engagements may be among the following selections: •_ Hunters Steeplechase.—-French Fleet and Red Heather. ' Brighton Handicap— Ranclagh ana iStarsbooter. , Birthday Handicap.—Pink Note ana Waterline. ' , Otago Steeplechase. —Radiate ana Double Soult. . Tradesmen’s Handicap. —Black Duke and Inevitable. , June Hurdles.—Antrim Boy and Zeuxis. , St. Clair Handicap.—Palermo and Miss Bradbury . ■■ Winter Handicap.—Full 1 eatlier, and Royal Chime. If started in this event Smithereens must be respected as also must Salmo Salar. However on form it looks'like the first-named pail. turf gossip. Xew season’s license applications foi trainers and jockeys close to-morrow. • Ranclagh. -is .galloping well again. Watch hi mat; Dunedin to-morrow. Hounslow is said to be .an awlul cripple when he hopples out into the course at -Riccarton each morning. He potters about for about half an hour, comes in warmed up and then runs quite a fair gallop. Honest and a mudlark he might; very easily win a race at Wingatui even .though he is such .a cripple. He is engaged in the Brighton Handicap at Dunedin to-morrow. If pink Coat stands up to his work there is prospects of .sending him over to Sydney for spring racing^ * Report* from Wingatui arc to the effect that Circulation, who is engaged yin the Birthday Handicap at Dunedin to-morrow, is getting through very encouraging work. v it was a good finishing effort that landed Nancy Lee third in the sprint event at Taumaranui on Saturday, and she is sure -to be benefited as a result of that race. It would not be surprising to see the Lucullus mare racing prominently at next week’s- Auckland meeting. She is certainly regaining-

lier past brilliance. , «■ Apparently the. handicapper was not sufficiently impressed by the merit of -Arikiwai ’» win at Ashburton 10 increase • the .Paladin gelding’s weight for the Birthday Handicap at Dunedin. The merit of the win, however, becomes enhanced by the fact, that Arikiwai got cast ;in 'his box about a fortnight ago and hence could not do any * fast work of . note for a mile and aquartcr journtiy. He meets a much stronger field‘to-morrow than was the case at Ashburton.' If Apache shows a return to form he should gather some of the prize money at Dunedin. The two aged sprinters, Dave and Hoariri .both displayed abundance of speed in the open sprint at Taumaranui last Saturday . while- their condition lasted. They, ‘both have engagements in the Members’ Handicap at the Auckland meeting and being partial to 4V heavy track and tho going to suit 'them arc more than likely to show up prominently. It is given,- out. that Omeo’s connections are more than confident of their representatives chances in the big steeplechase lit Auckland.. _ , J. Pryor lias decided on the trip to Auckland and among' his team to go north is the Cornwall candidate, Men: dip. It is stated that Meudip is in excellent trim rind is expected to collect a stake at. the meeting. ) Judging on his form since-he spreaubaglotf a good field of fair raters at itheVFeilding HptcKj meeting; Llyn Dim. musi'-.haVe a mote than ordinary chance 'in thevßaiiknwa Cup on liicsday. Very little is being said of Palm s prospects in the Cornwall Handicap at Auckland. With his usual pilot, H. ,Wi"°'ins, to assist him, lio should not be far out at the finish. 'He is reported .very lit. . . Both Sapient and Audience arc forfeiting their Dunedin engagements and will compete at the Otaki. meeting. • A. Mcssorvv is coming up from tho South Island to specially ride them* J. Barry lias gone south to do tno Chokeborc stable riding at the Dunedin Bradbury, the three-year-old Paper Money filly is claimed to possess <i rare turn of speed and is likely to develop into a good winner. tape claims an engagement at Dunedin tomorrow. * ' *. , „ Tlio two-vcar-oKI lilly Painkiller D„ Shambles from Leading Lady-made a bold showing at Ashburton in the Inal Plate as a first outing. She is trained by W. Stone for her Wellington owner, Mrs. T. B. Divan. . ' A southern scribe -tells us that Starshooter’s form at Ashburton when lie ran second to Arikiwai, was not good enough to suggest he would win under) big loads at Dunedin. He is only a useful, honest gelding. He is not h good one. but he ©.an handle the sott going. ®One would like to know if the south scribe was disappointed in his not winning. ' - ~ iSnow Prince, winner of -the, Maude Taumaranui, made a very impressive showing in'that event par.tieularlv ' over the last -half furlong when he came with a wonderful burst to beat Yalroitifi by half a length. Snow Prince ' is engaged in the second division of ' the Jackson Handicap at the Auckland meeting on Tuesday. He is certainly worth following. Although. Elysianor failed to get into the money at. 'Taumaranui; he ran a •rood race and. was staying .on at the finish. A. F. Neale has the brown gelding looking in great order and, despite his weight, he can be relied upon to put up a good showing in the (G-.N. Hurdles at Taumaranui on Saturdav. Pukerimu returned .-to. the birdcage lame. It was a recurrence of his old trouble, but it is hoped that it wilt be sufficiently overcome to start him in the Penrose Hurdles on the first day of the Auckland meeting. F- E. lioo.mb -has him in good facing condition. , i '''' . The Otaki Meeting. Review of First Day’s Reids. f The Otaki Maori B.C. winter meetinis always a popular attraction -or Wellington racegoers and a big crowd of enthusiasts aTe sure to bo in attendance. L.M.M. w-iH review tbo first duy’tt field* in next Monday 's issue of .this paper. - _ , . Big Sporting Week. The second-week in July will be Wellington’s big sporting week. .The Wellington Racing Club will set the bad rolling on Tuesday, July Bth, w ith the Wellington Steeplechase day of its fixture. The following day Wednesday, truly <«h, the Maori -Rugby team will meet the ’ .British . faatball ieom; at Athletic Park. The races will bo a.(t- ---> wanced another 'x stage -o?i.,Tl>ttr»aay, . -. while op Friday the annual meeang of

gates, will no doubt be anxious to complete deliberations in time to attend tho open air attraction at Athletic Park. JUMPERS FOB OTAKI. At Hastings on Saturday Crown Emblem (L. Berry), Whakauo (E. Dunn) and Zippor (L. Matheson) were companions in a school essay of once round the hurdles. The former finished the best part of three lengths in front. The time, limn 39see, was above the average, in fact, it iS the best;done there for some time, and, as Crown Emblem may be brought through to Otaki for the second day she should bo well worth remembering (says the “ Tribune”). Zippor, who goes to the same meeting, has not been jumping as proficiently as formerly. Whakaue is vet a novice at the game, and with a little more experience should come good. NOTES FROM AWAPUNI.

J. P. Coyle- left on Thursday for Ellerslie with Mister Gump and Paliu. The Bronzetti' gelding appears to be a vastly improved horse as the result of his Wanganui outing and he should make a bold bid to repeat his last year’s victory. On Saturday morning Mister G-amp (®. Reed) strode quietly over a round prior to picking up Robbie’s Mistake just past the mile post on tho course proper. They ran on terms thereafter right into the straight where Mister Gamp drew away to complete his task in 1.55 2-5. Robbie’s Mistake claims an .engagement in the Otaki Hack Handicap at the local fixture, on King’s Birthday. Aurora Borealis, who has been out on her owner’s farm at Himatangi since immediately prior -to the Wangftnui meeting, .was brought in to the Awapuni tracks on -Saturday morning and will continue her activities there pending her departure for Auckland. The - Day Comet mare was not asked to do anything of a serious nature, she being run along over a round at a steady pace. . In all probability the majority of the Awapuni horsemen will centre their attention on the Otaki fixturo and R. Reed, who might well-have been expected to. go north, will attend tho moating nearer home. T. -Green, howcvcv, will be at Ellerslie, where'he' has been engaged for Sea town, Gold Money /knd Air Laddie. Green enjoyed a great innings on the first-named pair last year. ' Foui- Aces (D. Heap), who is down to compete in the hunters’ ovent at Ellerslie, was sent over the battens the reverse way on Saturday in company with Poppy Day (R. Parker), and the pair gavo quite a good display, although Poppy Day jumped rather big nt the- initial fence along the back. The latter, who is destined for that branch of the, game, will, however, contest the Maiden Flat at Otaki. Four Aces has recorded some excellent performances over the battens without actually winning and ho should race well in the north. . ' . ’

Palin (R. Reed), who will accompany Mister Gamp to Auckland,- was accorded a brief let-up after Feilding, but ho is in good order to re-enter upon an active career. In company with Glerfrossic (T. Green), Pahu jumped off at the seven furlong post to run the last Six furlongs in 1.26 1-5 without being pressed. A plain looking customer, ho races better than appearances would suggest. Glenrossie will compete at Otaki where he is nieelv weighted in the To Horo Handicap on the opening day.

Three of the quintette which Awapuni supplies for the open sprint contest at Otaki in Cailanmorc (K. Voitre), MOutoa Treasury (J. -Nieolson) and Keddar (R. Reed) were associated in a scamper over five furlongs. In the run down the -straight Cailanmorc gained a -slight advantage over Moutoa Treasury to complete his task in 1.8 .4-5, Keddar being a length, and a-half ■baek. In view of the state of the- going, it was a very fair effort. Later on, Dobbin (R. Reed) beat Patearoa (J. Pagan) over the same distance in 1.9 4-5, but the fifth member of the Awapuni sprinting contingent, Hunting Boy, was restricted to strong pace work on the sand. - An attractive performance was, recorded by the Colossus youngster in G. New-’s stable on Saturday morning' when, with J. Nieolson in the saddle, he sprinted home from the two furlong post with Merry Melody (W. Broughton) in 25 1-5, there being practically .nothing between them at tho finish. Moutoa’.s Acre (J. -Nieolson) and Braggart (K. Voitre), two Maiden Flat candidates at Otaki, arc regular associates in their track gallops and there is seldom ' much between them. On Saturday .morning, however, Montoa’s Acre iiad the best of matters in the run home to cover the five furlongs in 1.10 4-5, Braggart being a length and a-half baek after having had the inside running.

Terra Firraa (J. Nieolson), Trojan Melody (W. Broughton) and Merry Damon (R. Reed) went out to perform a half-mile gallop, but the Raukawa Cup . candidate found the youngsters too speedy for. him over a short course and he was still well back at the post; Terra Firmu, who is a great upstanding sort, got up in the last few strides to head off-Trojan Melody, they running the distance in the good time of 1.9. In all probability Merry Damon will go through with his engagement at Otaki despite his 10.1, while the other pair will compete in the Maicten Flat.

Lady Laekbam/(C. Broughton), who will not come in till the second day at Otaki, had Fiery Comet (R. Reed) as a . partner oveT five furlongs, the Lackham filly having the advantage after, taking 1.10 3-5 for the distance. Fiery Comet was operated on some five weeks back and ho is now tubefies Coon Song (K. Voitre). who did not run np to expectations at Wanganui,, jumped off at the six furlong post to run the last live furlongs in 1.9 3-a! The Hunting Song gelding has'undoubted pace, but he fails to stay on. The Masher was taken to Blenheim by A. Quinlivah in company with Winlock, but it was the latter which supplied the wherewithal to cover the expenses of the trip. On his return home the mentor handed over The Masher to A. Wright, who -is now. stationed at Feilding. There was not a great deal of jumping attempted on Saturday morning, First Ruler (H. Gordon) being the -'sole member of the Awapuni quartette for Otaki to" .essay a „ turn over the small fences. The Chief Ruler mare gave a vastly improved showing at .Wanganui, but the indifferent fences at Otaki may give, to some of tho others a too. great advantage on the flat, for the chestnut mare is almost invariably toiling along in the rear in the early stages of her races. Hymestrason (A. McDonald) was sent a couple', of rounds over the steeplechase fences, while Evening Hero (C. Robinson) had his education as a jumper furt-her advanced by a round over the small fences.
