Dr. Simpson, of Wellington, was among the visitors to Otaki yesterday. He returned home to-day.
The engagement is announced oi Mr S. G. Waite, of Auckland, and Miss B. Webbv, of Otaki.
Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Mosley, of Otaki, leave to-morrow for Xapier, on holiday. i.'ti.J.&SEl Mr. and Mrs. Alei Wilson will spend their holidays in Gisborne, and leave Otaki to-morrow.
Miss Miriam Herrick, of Victoria University College, ha.- been awarded a "Sarah Ann Rhodes" science scholarship of £125 a year, and will go to Dunedin for further study. Miss Herrick i s the daughter of Mr. E. M. Herrick. J.P.. of Levin. Mr.-. Bueben Short, a highly-respect-■ed resident of Palmerston North, and formerly of Wellington, celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday last. Mrs. Short, v--ho was born ie Birchingtoa_on December 17th, 1824, came to New Zealand in the ship Lady Nugent, landing at Wellington on March 17th, IS4I. Sire, like other pioaeers, experienced many hardships, but met all with grim "determination. Mrs. Short, although such a great age, has never worn spectacles, and even, now sews and reads without their aid. She also enjoy.- fairly good health. Mrs. Short is at present residing with her son, Mr. S. Clifton, of Bikiorangi.
