MANAKAU.

A meeting of the executive committee of the Manakau Patriotic Society was held on Wednesday night. Present: Messrs Howard Andrew (in the chair), Blair, Bramley, Clifford, L. Atkins, (acting-secretary), Mrs Bramley and Miss Marshall. Apologies owing to absence were received from Messrs C. Nees (secretary) and Dalzell. '

Minutes and correspondence were dealt with, while arrangements for a welcome social to live or six returned men were put in hand, committees being elected to carry out various parts of the programme. The date fixed was September 3rd, while it was reported that Mr Childs had generously decided to forego his piture entertainment for that night. It was stated that the society had accomplished good work in catering for the wants of returned men. Mr Clifford re-introduced the subject of a peace memorial, and it was suggested that an obelisk be secured and erected in a suitable locality. It was agreed to discuss the matter further at a public meeting; in the meantime the secretary to write to various monumental masons for quotations.

Staff-Sergeant McLachlan. woodwork instructor under the Wellington Education Board, was among the soldiers to return by the Marania. StaffSergeant McLachlan is well known here, where he has relative.". In our report' of the Tennis Club meeting it was stated that Mr Mickle reported -that, a further £ls had been paid fo tlie contractor for court improvements. This was an error. The meeting passed a previous payment to the amount named.
