OTAKI TOWN BOARD.

J . MONTHLY MEETING. Tito ordinary monthly meeting of the ttbovc Board -was held last night. Present: Commissioners .Byron Brown (chairman), W. IT. Reynolds, J. Meads, P. Rikihann, H. H. Olliver, H. Nlcolson, R. M. D'Ath.

Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: —

From G. Renwiek declining to work further for the Board as surfaceman or to continue to act as poundkeeper.— Received.

From Riecarton Borough Council asking to be supported in the following resolutions:—That the Council protests against the Influenza Epidemic Relief Fund as voted by Parliament being administered by Charitable Aid Boards, Public. Health Department, or any Department under the Minister for Public health, but supports it being administered by local bodies. —Received.

From District Health Office, asking for a report on a nuisance at the Mission property. —Attended to. From L. Faulkner, offering his services as draughtsman in drawing up a plan of the Town Board area. —Received.

From Horowhcnua County Council, enclosing account for share of interest on loans for year ending March 31, 1910, totalling £l4O 19s 10d —To be attended to.

From Municipal Solicitor, asking for remits the'Board may have for consideration at a conference of delegates, date of which would be sent later. —Received. From X.Z. Town Planning Association, slating a conference re town pi •■ring would bo held shortly, and asking that a delegate be appointed. — Held over.

Sanitary Report. S. Korgrove (sanitary inspector) reported having inspected premises complained of on Beach road and found it in good sanitary condition, and not worse than other places in the Board's area. However, he had suggested to the occupants to erect a boarded fence which would serve the purpose.—Received, Electric Lighting. The Chairman stated he had made application in various quarters for a loan, but up to .the present had been unsuccessful. He would, however, sec the Minister of Public. Works when at Shannon, and discuss matters appertaining to the electric lighting question, lie thought if a loan could not be secured, and the Mangahao scheme was going to take four years at least to complete, then the Board might turn its attention to another installation. A letter was read from the State Advances Office relative to the Board's application for a loan of £7OOO for electric lighting purposes, stating the matter would receive attention. The secretary of the Mangahao Electric Power League wrote stating the Minister for Public Works had assured a deputation that the preliminary work could be started within two weeks (from February 3) if labour was available. The Minister would visit Mangahao in the course of two or three weeks, when he would bo accorded a reception at Shannon. —Chairman to attend.

Miscellaneous. It was decided to ask Mr Hill by whose authority he had utilised the vacant section recently acquired by the Board from the Government. It was agreed that Dr. Pomare bo again written to relative to the collection by the Board of the Native dog tax. Some time ago the Minister hud written that he was considering the matter, and the Board-now asked for a definite understanding.

It was pointed out that the .speed of motor cars at Noble's corner and the bank_ corner was excessive and dangerous, and it was resolved to restrict the speed at these places to ten miles an hour.

It was also agreed to inquire further into the flatter of a plan, which had been under way for years, of the Town Board area. '

In response to a request by G. Gallagher, it .was agreed to give him an extra 2s 6d per week for ranging duties.

Gallagher aLo attended on the Board in support of a claim made against Mr Reynolds for driving fee, which was disputed by the latter, he contending the cow complained of was taken from land that was beyond the jurisdiction of tSe Board. There was conflicting evidence, and the Board decided in future that the property in question be not traversed by the ranger. The question of dispute between the two parties was referred to the Roads Committee for settlement.

Accounts amounting to £55 lis 4d were passed for payment.
