WALLACE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting, held m tho Council Cnambers on Friday, 18th January, was attended by Crs H. Garden(Chairman), T. A. Buckingham, \V. J. A. McGregor, F. J. Linscott, \V. B. Hopcroft, b. Fowle, H. F. Bkitch, W. T. James and L. Cody. Before commencing business the Chairman moved a motion of sympathy be recorded and a letter of condolence forwarded to Hon. . de la Pcrrelle m the loss of his wife. — Carried, members standing. The Comm.ssioner of Crown Lands, ■ InvercargUl, wrote advising a man had been engaged tor a tortnight's work -m cleaning out the oid channel from the river up through Wm. Hamlin's and T. H. Molioys properties, and a^lved ihat any further inspection be held over meantime. — Received. J. T. Wilson, Merrivale Road, applied under the "£>uuihiand Land Drainage Act 1 ' to have Outfall drain through Mr Dowl ing's property cleaned, out. — S.eps to be taken under the Drainage Act. R. Greenslade, Otautau, applied that part of the two Government giants on the Estimates for MerrivaleTe Tua main road be spent m making the road accessible.— Held over for inspection. D. S. McLean, Medical Officer of Health, Dunedin, wrote m regard to the offensive smell of the drain into Boundary Creek, Tuatapere, and also asked that a channel be provided to take the surface water which lies m front of the Post Office. — Left to Member and Engineer to attend to. . C. SimmSy— Pukemaori, applied to have two culverts across road from Section 33, Block 13, Waiau Riding, -lowered to give outfall.— Matter to be attended to. R. G. Heller, Ohai, applied for a transfer of slaughter-house license from Frank Hoare. — Granted under usual conditions. The Manager, N.Z. 'Loan and Mercantile ' Agency Co., wrote, m reference to grant for the Lake Mavora road. — Clerk to write Southland County and attempt to make grant available for expenditure on this road. G. A. *C. Darby, Conservator of Forests, Invercargill, requested that the Council's foremen be instructed to be very careful m the burning off of roads and other Works- to assist every effort to prevent forest fires.— Council concurs with the request. H. Lewis, County Clerk, Tauranga, forwarded the following resolution and asked . the Council for support, and to communicate with the Minister and District Members their views : "That this Council views with alarm the ever-increasing burden put upon the ratepayers since the inception of Motor Traffic, more especially m the case of Main Roads so largely and continuously used by the general travelling public. The Tauranga Borough Council considers that the one and most equitable method of coping with the problem of maintenance of Main Roads is per medium of the Petrol Tax or other direct levy on Motor users, and that the Government be urged to pass legislation to effect this solution at the earliest opportunity. — Received. Thos. Dorgan, Tuatapere, asked the Council to subsidise a grant for the gravelling of Keenan's Creek. — Grant for next year's estimates to be subsidised. F. W. Rowley, Secretary, Department of Labour, Wellington, forwarded circular letter m regard to a speciad meeting 1 to declare the statutory half-holiday, r— At the special meeting held at noon Wednesday was declared the statutory half-hdliday m the County for 1929. i Mrs Hodgetts, Lon£wood, asked that a few loads of binding be put on new gravel where 'laid by kauries contract.— Matter to be attended to. .•Resolved that this Council agrees to ejfjfsen{:ly maintain, m future, to the of the lpcal representative gf the Public Works Department, the road metalled under these proposals : Coutt and Waterhouse road, £ for £, ,£IOO. ; Wakapatu-Round jjm TOad) £ for £, £100 5 Wairaki Settlment road, £ for £> £o3 ; Cummin'g road, £ for . £, £50. ' ' Resolved that an additional charge of 10 per cent, be added to all rates remaining unpaid after the 4th March, .1929. Resolved the Engineer lay off the work on Lamont Terrace, Boundary • road, Nightcaps. The following telegram was received from Hon. E. A. Ransom, Minister of Public Works, m regard to the jevel- crossing over the Mount Linton road: "Your telegram of 22nd inst. ? received protesting against Ohai Railway Board constructing- level crossing Qhai-Birchwood extension. — Your request for overhead bridge is receiving urgent consideration" The itinerary of work laid out by the Engineer for the big grader was approved, and consideration of the apportionment of cost held over. Resolved to compel owners of rural boxes to comply with the Council's regulations, which does not allow of these boxes being erected near the » edge of tho gravel. The tender of Mr R. G. H. Robertson for lease of Section 12, Aparima Hundred, was accepted, and the Member and Clerk authorised to complete. Mr Thos. J. Walker was appointed to the position of Ranger for the Orepuki Riding. Resolved that this Council recommend that the deck level of jhe new Thornbury bridge be only 18 inches higher than the present structure, as this will give ample clearance for IwOeguiremeßts, ,

ENGINEER'S REPORT. Since last meeting the weather has been excellent for road work, but little progress is as yet being made towards completion of the large number of contracts now let including- the unfinished ones from last year. Tenders are now being- called for the erection of the Thornbury and Waicoe Creek bridges, and will be laid on the "table for the February meeting of the Council. — Adopted. ORDER PAPER. Councillor Garden' moved that the following amounts be voted for expenditure m Orepuki Riding: Coutt and Waterhouse Road, £ for £, £100; Wakapatu to Round Hill, £ for £, £100; total, £200. Councillor James moved thnt the following amounts be voted for expen r diture m Aparima Riding- : MerrivaleWaikouro Road, maintenance, £50 ; Hundred Line, East of Railway (half to be charged to'Wairio), £*U. Councillor Buckingham moved that the following amounts be voted for expenditure m Otautau Riding: M.H. Argyle-Tuatapere, maintenance (McFarlane and Paulin's Bush Roads) £2 for £1, £25 ; M.H. Winton-Otr.utau, maintenance, £2 for £1,' £67 ; total, £92. Councillor McGregor moved that the following amount be voted for expenditure m Wairaki Riding: Wairaki Settlement Road, £ for £, £53. Councillor Blatch moved that the following amounts be voted for expenditure, m Mararoa Riding: Allan and Ward Road, Holmesdale, Gravelling, £25 ; Cumming Road, £ for £, £50; M.H. Gore-Te Anau, Maintenance — Lumsden-Mossburn, £72 £24 ; v Moss-burn-Key, £150, free; Key-Te Anau, £60, £20; M;H. Lorne-Castlerock., £120, £40; Wreys Bush-Mossburn, Maintenance, £150, £50; Sutherland Road, £75 ; total, £284. Accounts amounting- to £2589 3.11 were passed for payment.
