"Rocks" Settlement, and trusted same would be attended to beforo the summer traffic commenced. — Writer to be informed that the road will be attended 10. G. Alao that the culvert constructed some time ago to- the north of the junction be sealed up. — In reference to first part the application is granted, the latter to be left m abeyance. Mrs E. Watson, Riverton, wrote r protesting against the proposal to shift the level crossing near Long wood Railway Station, as without it the ' best part of her land would be made inaccessible. — Petitioners to be informed of the objections to the shifting of the crossing. K. H. Trail, Caversham, wrote objecting to the proposal to shift level crossing at Longwood as it was the only outlet to his property. — The crossing to be left as it is meantime. , Messrs R. Pirie arid J. F. Smith, Isla Bank, wrote requesting that the road to their properties be gravelled.—^ Member and Engineer will inspect the road on Thursday, 21st inst. Jas. Beck, Waicola Homestead, wrote requesting that the blockage m channel below the bridge on road leading to his property be cleaned out. During the last flood the- channel was further blocked and the water flows over the writer's paddocks' and into the old creek bed. — Tbis Council accepts no liability for clearing channel. G. Gorton, Otautau, applied for compensation for " time lost " by being stopped and harassed by tho Otautau River and Domain Board from getting gravel supplies to carry out his contracts. The writer estimated he had lost one week's work valued at £30.— Held over till contract is finished. Rev. M. Ayrtou, Otautau, applied for a crossing to Methodist Parson age on Yellow Bluff road. — Referred to Otautan Town Board for favourable consideration. Messrs G. Harrington and J. Palmer applied to have road leading to their properties off the Merrivale Road gravelled and repaired, as it was m bad order. — Government grant to be applied for. Jas. Gibson, Scotts Gap, drew attention to thfi culyort on road leading to his property, and that the banks had fallen m and blocked same, necessitating attention. — Matter to be left to Engineer to attend to. Kilkelly Bros., Ltd., applied for permission to put m a heart totara wood culvert across road about nine chains east of their Tuatapere mill to give water supply for a pump.— Granted subject ' to the Engineer's approval. 11. 1. Homer, Tuatapere, asked that the whole amount available for Merrivale-Te Tua Road bt. expended. — Writer to be informed that money will be spent on work as laid out by the Engineer unless the Oommissioner agrees to a deviation at once. J. and M. Glynn, Orawia, Exeoutors m the Eftate of the late John Glynn, applied for permission to erect a temporary fence ou roadline fronting Section I§, Block VIII, for the purpose of ploughing gorse down. — Permission granted under usual conditions H. A Holmes, Nightcaps, applied for permission to erect a bowsei pump at his garage at Ohai.^-Granted during the pleasure of the Council. Wm. Lowrie, Ohai, applied to have ditch m front of Section 14, Block 1, Extension No. 1, deepened to take surplus and waste water.— Matter to be left to Member and Engineer to attend to. H. Ferguson, Nightcaps, applied for a culvert to give aocess to Section 15, Plan 2309, Ohai.—Request granted, provided there is not already one culvert. K. Frood, Clerk, Nightcaps Town Board, notified tho Council- that the Board was grading, forming and gravelling footpath iv Evan Street, Nightcaps, and gravelling footpath on Clifford's lload. W Porter, Te Anau, asked what the Council was going to do abou.t giving him access to his property, as he had to trespass meantime to get on or uil' his .section. — Matter to be left to Member to look into, 11. J Fa i rant, Chairman Southland Piovincial Court, New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, wrote asking the .Council to send representatives to a mcetiua to be held m the Town Hall, I.'-.vurcargili, on Friday, 22nd October, at 10.30 a.m. — The Chairman wju. appointed delegate. C. 11 Smith, Assistant Uuder Secretary Public Works Department, forwarded a circular letter m regard to the handing over of control of roads to Local Bodies. — Received. The Chairman reported- ,iu regard to the Birchwood Hunt kennels that he had inspected same and found them m very good condition. Mr V. E. Page interviewed the Council iv regard to the publication of "The Dominion of New Zoaland," when the Council decided not to contribute. The application of Mr E. G. Luss--inoor ro hut was refer. cd to the Engineer to leply to The Otautau Town Board's account for erection of electric street lights on Liemeu Street. — The Council accepts no liability. Accounts' amounting to £2209 12s Od were passed for payment. Cr Linscoot, representative to the -Highways District, reported that the Highways Board were increasing their subsidy from £1 for £1 to 30s Main Highways to £1 from the Council. It was moved t*hat owing to the Gtautau River Board's drastic regulations with regard to the removal of gravel from Aparima River, and tho consequent hold up of urgent Oounty work, this Council is compelled to iguore those restrictions, and instruct its Engineer to direct contractors to take gravel from wherever he considers there is no immediate danger of damage being done thereby and that the River Boai;d be notified that all reasonable precautions will be taken to allay the Board's apprehension m the matter. therefore very little "outside work has been done Some contractors have already started on last year's incompleted works, bub others are, so far, making no shape. In connection with the letter read at the June meeting from Mr W. S. Hunter on behalf of Mrs Emily Watson and others, asking for a hew railway level erossin the vicinity Pourokino township (Riverton Orepuki railway), the. main condition under which this crossing would be put m viz. tho removal of another crossing near Longwood siding, which gives access across railway to two properties, can not be agreed to owing to the objections from the two interested parties as per letters read at this .meeting. In connection with Mr Dillon's application of June for ioad repairs at Pahia, Cr. Garden inspected, and it hi.s been decided to reform 8 chains of the unmetalled road onwards from Mr Dillon's house. This work should bo done m the early summer. In connection with the gravel supplies at Yellow Bluff Biidge, on the 9ch inst. the Council on payment of a royalty of 4d mado arrangements with Mi W. Frastyr. that will insure a supply of gravel for some time to come. With reference to Mr Ogren's request that the Council clear oui road ditches on Colac Hound Hill at Oraka, Cr. Garden inspected, aud it was decided that the matter was not one for the Council, but was more £„r the land owners themselves. Re Mr H. Spear's complaint m connection , with the state of Riverton- Colac road arrangements have been made to" have the worst holes filled at once. In connection with Mrs Fletcher's request for road widening ou Browuridg* road, Cr. Hopcroft has instructed me to comniunicato with the Public Works' Engineer re spending balanco of old grant on this work. Ro Mr Buick's application for repairs to lower end of Boyle's road, Gladfield, Cr. Buckingham inspected and decided, to-main-tain existing gravel and also extend same as far as Mr Buick's gate. Re Mr E. A. Wilding's, application for metalling on Mansou road, Cr. McGregor inspected, and the new Govern ment grant bas been laid off for metalling and specifications sent to the Public Works Department. Re Messrs Thos. McKay, and Sons notification that they, have given up uncompleted portion of maintenance contract on Mossburn-Lumsden section of Gore-Te Anau Main Highway, with Cr. Blatch's permission I have can celled the oontract and re advertised the new and old votes .for this length. - A large number of specifications (both Government grants and Main Highway's) have been prepared and. sent away, and on receipt of authority the works will be put m hand. The bridge gang is at present doing some repairs to willow protective works adjoining Mr May's ? at Double Cabbage Tree, and will start on the Kowhai bridges as soon as authority arrives. „
