NIGHTCAPS NOTES.

I From Our Own Correspondent Sunday and Monday weather conditions were so near an approach to what wo would wish an ideal summer day lo be, ond sudden the change from wet wintry weather, which made most people feel glum, to the beautiful sunshine would almost turn one's head. On«* can justly expect some good weather now. Now Ithat the Town- Board has commenced work on the street improvements, one would naturally think that equine night strangers would be at a disadvantage, but this is not so apparently. The police station kitchen garden was the destination, during the week, of one of the aforementioned animals. It is not known whether it was taken to imprisonment, or whether the owner has to suffer this time* Mr Jas. Ritchie, "Blythe," has just brought home his two racehorses from Mr Biyd's training stables at luvercargill. Mr J. B. Purdue has not got back yet from tho Dunedin Trotting Meeting on account of tlie flood; but it is to be hoped he will be home for the Winton meeting on Wednesday. The Opio=Beaumont mail service has been a source of anxiety for some lime past to the settlers interested. Tho tenders oalled by the Department a short time ago resulted m no applications being received, and the mail has been carried by tho late contractors .until some decision is ai rived at. The trouble with these countiy mail services is that the price tho Postal Department expect the work to be done for is not sufficient unless taken m conjunction with other work. Tenders are to be called j again m the hope of someone applyiue. The tenders for tho construction of a tramline from Linton Colliery to Mossbank terminus being all higher than the estimate, it has been decided to go on with tho work by day labour. . Our soldier bootmaker ha 3 been patronised to such an exten t that the trade has become congested, and an assistant is urgently required. . Mr Sprango is not unmindful of tbe patronage accorded him, and the spirit of patriotism which prompted the generous response to tho appeal to the publio. The world-famed Fisk Jubilee Singeis visited this township last Friday, and were accorded a good house, hut the night being one of the roughost possible, the country residents; did not get m m great numbers. Tlie evening's entertainment was of such a character all through that any words of praise would be inadequate to .express the feeling of admiration whioh. all who attended must have felt. Such singing was nevet heard here before. It was eimply splendid, both the company items and the individual solos. There was a purity about tho whole entertainment whioh is sometimes sadly lacking m these days of advanced ideas at concert performances. If the Fisk Siugers had charged doublo the entrance fees, the charges would not have been reckoned too high for the class of talent shown, One can but ask : What induced the Fisk Singers to visit Nightcaps ? Was it the fact of the existence of a Town Board? The Rev. R. Bandy is leaving' for his annual holidays and the pulpit will.be occupied during his absence by tho Rev. M. J. Robertson, whom it is understood has just passed through his theological studies and has received a call to tho Waikiwi Fresbyterian oharge.

NIGHTCAPS SCHOOL COMMITTEE, j The Nightoaps Public School Committee held its monthly meeting m the school- j room lust night. Thcrri woro present Rev. E, Bandy, chaiaman, Messrs D. Sinclair, I junr., J. Tinker, J. Grant, juur,, Kyle, \i. J. Irwju. j A lettpr was received frop* tho Railway Department informing the Qoiuraittep m reply to thoir Jotter that no concessions would be granted m connection with & special picnic train this year. A proposal was discussed as tq whether f. local picnic should bo held or not, but it was not thought abvisable at present. ' The secretary and Mr Jnyiu werp to arrange about getting the Coronation Ifall for tiho distribution of prizes on a day suitable to the teachers and scholars. ' Soveral accounts were passed fcr payment. Kindling wood aud coal to bo procured for firing. A matter m connect ion with tho teacher's residence to be attended to, [ A letter of thanks was received from Mrs Jaggers and family. A letter from the Headteacher was read intimating that he had ordered Ithe gold medal for the dux of the school. Mr Donald Sinclair moved that a Bubcommittee be formed of the Chairman, Secretary, and Mr Irwin to go into the matter of getting concrete laid down around the school building, what the approxiirote cost would be and .the best means of raising the money to meet the cost - and also that ih the meantime 2 trucks of gravel be prooured as the grounnds of the school were m a deplorable condition jn wet weather. The motion was seconded by Mr Kyle and carried. '.
