MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting, held on Friday was attended by Crs. Cody (Chairman*; Horrell, Buckingham, McGregor, Rodger Linseott, Flynn, and Findlay. CORRESPONDENCE. Colonel T. Cowie Nieholls, officer com mauding Otago Military District, forwarded a proposal regarding planting trees for soldiers' memorials, and asked that the Council give the matter consideration. — Held over for one mouth for consideration Dy members. The Napier Borough Council forwarded a copy of a resolution dealing with the inrfluenza epidemic, stating that the Public Health Department did not take at the outset proper and necessary precautions to deal with the matter, and that the Government be requested to set up a Royal Commission to enquire and to take evidence m those boroughs where public hos^tals are situated as to how the epidemic was dealt with m such places; and a copy of this resolution was being sent to every city, borough, and county council throughout the dominion urging upon such councils the necessity of their endorsing the sains and forwarding to the Prime Minister with the least possible delay a similar resolution. — Received. A resolution was also reserved from the Hastings Borough Council, recommending !o the Government of New Zealand the urgent and absolute necessity of strengthening the financial position of the Public Health Department to enable it to control and combat' any epidemic that may attack the community, that a scheme be evolved whereby the bacteriological work of the Department may be extended m every direction, and that such salaries be otfered as to induce and encourage m^n of great scientific ability to offer their services.— Received. Donald .Sinclair, Acting Clvi k Nightcaps Town Board, wrote informing the Council that the Board accepted the various conditions m reference to the severance of the district from the Wallace County Council.— Matter to be left m hands of clerk to arrange all details. James Johnston, Feldwick, wrote asking that the road be graded from his place to the river, a petition for which was sent to the Council last year.— Writer to be informed that too much expenditure would be involved, and that the Council would apply to the Government for a grant. The Mount Linton Coal Co. applied for permission to construct a tramway for the purpose of connecting with the Ohai Railway Siding.— Request granted under the usual conditions, and with the Engineer's aproval. A circular was read from the Lake County Council relative to the ■ destruction of keas, urging upon the Government and County Councils the necessity of taking action to combat this pest.-— Received. The Public Works Department wrote notifying the allocation of £100, £1 fur JL'l, for metalling Clentr**id Devanney's road.— Received, Air J. C. Thomson, M.P., to be thankeU for his services m the matter. H. F. Blatch, Lin wood, Lnmsden, wrote asking that some improvement be made to mad between Hillside mid Liuwood, and stated that he would hold the Council responsible for any damage done if the work was not proceeded with.— Held over. Andrew Sinai), kurasden, wrote re the urgent ueed of taking immediate steps t<> stop the encroachment of the Oreti river. He had interviewed tne Minister of Public Works, who stated that if £-200 was placed to the credit of the Department, the woYk would be- proceeded with. He had already had £150 guaranteed, and asked the Council's - assistance towards providing the balance — Held over. The Finance Committee's report was read and adopted, and accounts amounting to £758 14/8 were passed for- payment CHILTON'S BRIDGE. Messrs Burke and Chilton appeared as a deputation with the object of giving information as to the urgent necessity of the Council taking the initiative m having Chiton's bridge repaired with the least possible delay. The deputation stated they had been put to great iucoiivomenee through the approaches to the bridge being washed away. They had no means of access to their properties, and apart from this the linking up of the road would prove a boon to those driving stock to the. local saleyavds from the Waiau, Scott's Gap and Merrivale. districts, They asked that the Council favourably copsider the matter,— Held over for a month. OTHER MATTERS. William Scobie, junior, Eastern Bush, reported that he had had an accident with bis waggon when crossing a tramway on his return from Tuatapere, and asked who was responsible for the damage caused.— Writer to be informed that Council admits no liability m the matter. Ranger's reports were received. It was resolved that Wednesday be the day of the week on which shops shall close m Wallace County, ns required by the Shops and Offices Act, 1908. It was decided that all rates not paid on or before February 10 be sued for. Cr. McGregor drew attention to the damage being done io roads m his ridiug by heavy traffic, and moved that traction engine owners carting coal from Ohai tc the Wairio railway station be asked to do , sist owing to the damage being done bj the heavy carting of coal m such a, wei summer and the difficulty of obtaining labour to repair the road.
