We regret to. re/port that the stagnation m. tho, stock market that set m at the * beginning of the j*GQiOi_th has increased rather than i dimished during the late week, although this is more apparent m the eastern and northern saleyards than m the west^for, as a matter of fact, the prices obtained at tke Otautau sale last Friday came as a welcome surprise to those who had been studying ..the progress of the i j market of late and were competent |to judge* for although there was uo keenness exhibited by buyers, still good sheep commanded good 1 prices, and it was only medium and inferior sorts that were at a discount. Ko doubt tne partial slump is duo to the recognition that the turnip crop is short of expectations, and is being encroached upon by northern graziers who are bare of feed, for although rain is reported to have fallen this week m both i Timaru and Oamaru districts, it was too late and too little to have * been of any real benefit. pessimistic m the extreme, already thousands of good fiheep are being potted, and unless freezing facilities are available shortly, a great many fat sheep now fie for export will have to follow suit, ao, m comparison, Southland graziers havo little to complain of, for if ; they can only buy m, or hold on until the spring there ia little doubt that there will be a strong demand from the north for all surplus sheep, and more particularly wethers. In sympathy with the sheep" market cattle are very hard to place ac late rales, especially young stores.
