, * ■ | An extraordinary case of 'loss of ' memory and the assumption of a false name and character under the influence of epileptic conditions is reported from Usedom, the Mayor of which town, Herr Troemel, who is aged 32 and married a j r ear ago, has oeen .missing since March 28. Herr Travel's sister, who is living m Bavaria,Weceived a heartbroken letter from her brother, stating that m a condition of. mental eclipse he had enlisted under a false name m Paris m / the French Foreign Legion, and was already drafted to Algiers. The post card is dated Saida, Algeria, and does not give anysfurther details, i From this it is concluded that Herr Troemel only awoke to the terrible I . reality when he was already m Algeria. ' The brother urged his sister to Break the news gently to his wife and then ■ make every effort to rescue him from his predicament. On receipt of the news the wife fainted, and is now ! dangerously ill. It appears that Mayor Troemel once before disappeared from . Usedom, and recovered his memory m ' a Paris hospital several months later. It is hoped that the French Govern- . ment will decide to release Herr Troemel as a lunatic, and not insist upon long a,nd trying negotiations.
