NIGHTCAPS.

From Week to Week.

The condition of the Manuka flill road at the present time m deplorable. Settlers from Birchwood can gee within a few miles of Nightcaps by good roads, and are suddenly faced with the quagmire from the Amines on top of Manuka Hill to the railway. Except to those who have travelled this road, the real condition is indescribable. A funeral from Nightcaps last week was stock up, and the coffin had to be taken from the hearse and carried across the adjoining paddocks. An 8-horse waggon team snapped the kingbolt^ and walked off with the fora* carriage," leaving the waggon buried m to the body iif a hole. Another carter when his dray dropped into one of the holes m the road, was horrified to see his horse lifted bodily off its legs and suspended m mid-air, with th shafts perpendicular m place of horizontal. It may not be coal carting that is responsible for the state of. thi3 road, but it is a remarkable thing that it is only between the coalpits and the railway it is bad, the xoad, otherwise to Birohwood is » good one. Skating Rink,— Great interest was manifested among the skating cirolti of Otautau ana Nightcaps lait week, when the race between Messrs J. Moore, of Otautau, and Walsh, of Nightcaps, took place. The race was run on Friday evening last, and all available space was filled with supporters of both competitors, and during the race a lively scene ensued. Ten rounds of the hall was the distance of the race, and the re* suit of the first attempt was a " tie." Later m the evening, the race was again run, and the Nightcaps champion carried off the prize, which was a valuable trophy Cup. Another item of great interest . was a hockey match between Otautau and Nigktcapa teams, and again Nightcaps |scoxed. The usual skating programme was also gone through, and altogether an exceedingly pleasant evening was spent, We understand Mr Moore is confident he can win his race m the Otautau hall, and has issued another challenge to skate Mr Walsh m Otautau on the 28rd inst.
