THE Otautau Standard AND WALLACE COUNTY CHRONICLE Tuesday, July BTH 1913. LANDSCAPE BEAUTY.

Some months ago we made an appeal inithese columns for the formation of an Ameneties Society for Otautau. We then pointed out that the very necessary removal by the Kiver Board of the willows on the river bank had destroyed one of the moat attractive features of the township. We then suggested that these trees might be replaced m a position that whilst not interfering with the watercourse might still add to the picturesqueneas of what — notwithstanding its occasional vagaries— is a charming little river. We also pointed out that the recreation ground with its natural advantages, added to by judicious improvements, might be made one of the pleasantest resorts m Southland. As our contributor "Bystander" has already pointed out, nothing adds to the at-, tractiveness of a town like a fringe of broad spreading and majestic trees. Many of the Towns of the Dominion that have a reputation for beauty like Temuka m this Island and Waipukerau m the North owe their fame to this cause alone. The 16th inst. is appointed for Arbour l)ay and if the services of all who are willing to help are enlisted and a weU thought out scheme is prepared, Otautau might be" made second to no Jown m New Zealand for its arboreal attractions>
