TWO PHRASES. Mr Hilaire Belloc, in the 'Academy,' gives an admirable example of how ornament may be employed in prose without destroying lucidity. He quotes from the ii. GospeW: "He answered him never a word." What a difference it would' have made if the translator had written : "Nothing appears to have been said in reply to the questions addressed to the prisoner by the magistrate."
