Football Remarks.

(By Enthusiast). Must offer apologies for brevity of interesting notes this week. As pennant matches begin, these columns will be longer. River ton. meets Orepuki on 19th. insfc. ot Rivorton, whilst Otautau opposes Nightcaps on same day at ■ ' The writer hopes that some enthusiast will send him notes on OrepukiRiverton game. For the match at Nightcaps, the writer will be present to criticise. Concerning Otautau, a good team appears on paper, and should those selected get away a very close game should eventuate. As to Ri^erton-Orepuki, the writer is not in a position to predict, owing to no information concerning the playing members of each team. The Otautau 3rd fifteen are looking eagerly forward to their game against the Riverton Kia Ora Club. As the senior tsams have to draw fresh blood each year from the juniors, it behoves Nightcaps and Orepuki seniors to assist and encourage the younger players. If only a third fifteen were formed in each of the above four centres, a series of matches j could yet be easily arranged. i I notice that " Touehline " says that things are only ' middling " in the Western district, Otautau only earn ing a complimentary adjective. That's right, Otautau, do not be behind, but take the lead. Another sore point with writer : In the Western district we have four large schools which have in attendance young footballers who receive no encouragement whatever beyond receiving a new footboll for nothing. I would suggest that, the Western District Sub-niron take the matter in hand and emulate the actions of the Otago and Southland Unions by arranging school matches. The writer is sure that teams could be fetched from Nightcaps, Otautau, Riverton and Orepuki schools. Should the teachers through professional duties be unable to assist on Saturdays, the Sub- union could very easily select a senior member from ; each local club to act as manager, and travel with the lads. No end of good would result from encouraging school football, and only time and want of space prevent the wri ter from enumerating all the beneficial results that would follow in fosteiing the game of Rugby amongst juniors.
