The Spinsters' Ball.
Congratulations must be conveyed ' to tbe young ladiea of Otautau for the ' excellence of the arrangements which ! resulted m such a brilliant success for j the ball on Wednesday evening last. I Nothing seemed to have been overlooked, and every detail was perfectly attended to. Seldom has the hall been so 'taxed for accommodation, every inch was occupied, and the scene was a very pleasing one. Everybody seemed happy, and it was evident that the gathering, from the commencetnent.^was going to be enjoyable, and this proved to be the case. A special band had been |en gaged from Invereargill, and. the music was of the best. The hall was nioely decorated, and a large marque.a was erected alongside, which made a commodious sapper room. The tables were lavishly spread with all the "delicacies procurable, and although the response to the kind invitation of the ladies had been more than liberal m the number of j acceptances to be present, the call was , more than met by the superabundance of good things. The ladies took - the I management m hand and very court- , eously and gracefully carried out their j duties, thus making everyone feel at home. Of course the occasion was not lost of reminding the sterner sex of their duty, that is those of them who are unattached m this year of I grace -rleap year -as a large motto was displayed bearing tlie inscription " United we stand," an I ti.e young I man who could not find a suitable , partner, both for the dances of the evening andithe march of life, would be bard to please. While the services of Mr D 0. McKenzie had been reserved as M.C., his duties m the fore part of the night were not irksome by any means as Mis£ M. Glynn very nicely performed the duties pertaining to that office. About 80 couples took part m the Grand March, which was most elaborately, displayed under Mr McKenzie's guidance. It must be a'lded that while every member^of the committee worked hard to make the ball a crowning success, speoial mention must be n.ade of the untiring work of the Misses Glynn, Mclvor, Joyce, and i Burgoyne. While it was impossible to ascertain the names of all the fair > dancers, with the very kind assistance '< of several lady friends the following j description of dresses is given ; — Mrs Soott, black evening dress; Mrs % J.
