STATUTORY MEETING. MR. HENRY HIRST ELECTED CHAIRMAN. Ac the statutory meeting of the County Council held on Wednesday afternoon all the members were present. The clerk, Mr Fullarton,' occupied the chair, and, after reading the section of the Act regulating the appointment of a chairman, requested nominations for the office. Mr R. Cupples proposed Mr Henry Hirst, and m a short speech eulogistic of Mr Hirst's services, expressed the hope that his term of office would be as v 6nccf ssful ns that of his predecessor's m keeping the council m a sound financial position. Or Dyer seconded 'the motion, and referred to the fact that Cr Hirst had been a member for some 25 years, and was a most capable chairman. Cr Fraser supported the motion. He h»d been associated with Cr Hirst for 12 years, and found 1 him a member who attended to his duties and with whom it was a pleasure to\ work. Cr Clark said he had been 7 years a member of the couLcil, and Cr Hirst was chairman when he first entered the council, and bis experience was that they vveie safe m Cr Hirst's hands, as he had the best grasp of all the intricacies of the Counties Act of any of the members. No other nomination being received the clerk declared Cr Hirst duly elected for the current year, and, m congratulating him on election to the office, vacated the chair m his favour. Cr Hirst briefly thanked members for the honour conferred on him. lie deeply appreciated 4heir action, and would do his utmost m the proper conduct of the council's business. He would not detain them as most of the members were deeply interested m the Wallace A. anJ P. Show being held that day. The retiring chairman, Cr Newton, bespoke . /or their new chairman the same courtesy and assistance from members as had been extended to him during the past 12 months. The council then proceeded to elect members to represent the council on the Wallace Charitable Aid Board and the Wallace Hospital Trust. For the former^one nomination only was required, and Cr Cupples proposed the Chairman, seconded by Cr King and carried. ' For the Hospital Trust threejnejabere were required, and several councillors intimated that it would be impossible for them to assume the office. Finally the Chairman, Crs King and Fraser were appointed. The council then adjourned till Thursday morning at 9.80 o'clock.
