OPUNAKE CRICKET

EXCITING SENIOR CAME OKAIAWA WINS OUTRIGHT High scoring, good indiyidul performances and an exciting finish in which Okaiawa scored 58 runs in 25 minutes to win outright with only 5 minutes to P.rJvre were the highlights of the Okaiawa-Opnnake senior game played over the week-end. A persistent drizzle held up the o'ume for two short periods and the wet field and soggy ball definitely favoured batsmen. B. De Castro injured a little finger in attempting- to take a long throw-in and will be unavailable for several weeks. Opunake batted'first against accurate bowling, Rose (39) batting confidently, But exceot for Lowry (12) and Adams (14) the remainder went cheaply, the -linings closing with 95 runs up. J. Meuli's steadiness was reflected in his figures of 6 for 30 off 16 overs (4 maidens) and the fielding was good. • i , Okaiawa opened well with 1 for 45, 2 for 89 and 3 for 118, Meuli (50), Kennedy (34), »Moeahu (24), Kibblewhite (IT) and Kara (29) all contributing good batting efforts. Opunake bowling and fielding suffered by comparison and as the hot afternoon wore on McKay (41) and Hackett (32 not out) took full toll. 8 were down for 260 at the end of the day's, play. 9 Opunake bowlers were tried, Adams being most successful with 3 for 31 off 8 overs.

Rose and Vincent went early in Opunake's second knock, but Jackson (87) scored freely, surviving several chances and remained until the leeway had been made up, (167 for 7) Somervell (17), Adams (11) and McCullum (16) assisting with useful partnerships. Then' Siddells (47) and Davey (39 not out) added 76 runs for the 9th wicket, scoring freely and running well for a bright effort, and 2i7 was on the board, leaving Okaiawa 82 to score \v about 90 minutes.

Rain stopped play when Okaiawa were 27 for 1, but was ;e----sumed at 6 p.m., J. Meuli, with a vigorous knock, scoring G 5 cf the total of 85 for 3 wickets. It was an exciting finish to an interesting game.
