HEADMASTER’S REPORT SPORTS ACTIVITIES The Headmaster,* Mr. E. J. McLaughlin, reported for March as follows : Primary Accommodation: Pending the erection of Mangahume building, Std. 4 is in the ' small room of Tuna Road. At present it would seem that the Mangahume rooms should be ready for the second term, late in May. Infant Department : The Derailed Bars erected in the grounds are proving very popular. I, would like to express my appreciation to Messrs. Martin and Hutchen for their work in installing them. When'one sees the amount of Eleasure the small children get rom this equipment, one can’t help feeling that more such occupational material should be provided. Secondary Athletic Sports: The annual sports were held on Wednesday, 24th of March, and proved very successful. Our thanks are due to those who assisted on the field and to the committee of the Home and School Association for the splendid effort in the stalls. I would like also to thank the Opunake Times for the full report of the proceedings. I would like to have Certificates of Merit prepared to present to those successful in events (approved). These would give each pupil a permanent record of his or her effort. The cost of these would not be great and I would like to have permission to make the purchase of Certificates.

Basketball: This year th« school is entering one Senior and probably two Junior teams in the local Saturday Competition. The purpose of this new. policy in regard to the girls’ sport is to make a better balance in the school with the time spent on the boys, and to promote the social purposes of the , school by giving the girls an opportunity to play for a school team engaged in open competition. I would like the committee to provide two hardwood posts for goals (approved). Mr. McGaughey i$ prepared to make permanent concrete holes for these if suitable timber is provided. The chairman, Mr. H. Shields apd Mr, J. S. Hickey congratulated the staff and pupils on the. excellent manner in which the annual sports were conducted. Reference to the Home and School’s excellent control of the stalls on the day was also made, A sum of £65 gross was raised—a most satisfactory effort.
