SPEAKING OF FASHIONS THE LATEST TREND Tartan and fancy striped accessories are prime favourites overseas at present. Introduced in chic sets of tiny back-of-the-liead hat and gloves; hat and large 'Dorothy bag; wide belt and jabit; or belt and snood, these vivid silks, rayons and lightweight woollen cloth, look delightful. X X X Perfectly plain little day frocks of navy, black, nutbrown, and matt white, with the usual nipped waists and softflowing skirt have become popular in Britain. These are the background for a variety of accessories which.give great scope for the clever needlewoman and which give an illusion of plenty to the slenderest wardrobe.

The glitter, of sequins and rhme-stonea, so important # to the evening dresses a short time ago is noticeably lacking thi9 season, according to a New York fashion expert. There is far more stress being laid on good basic design, sound craftsmanship, and fme materials. The hooy skirt and the modified bustle, usually in the form of a bow, are stil] good for evening wear.

Coloured nylon stockings to match the shade of every outfit are the latest fashion craze among American women, according to Mis& Eegina Ruberstein, who has recently returned to Sydnev after a five weeks' visit to the United States. Black, dark navy, grey and brown nylons were, she said, very popular at present, and some wqmen were wearing bright red stockings.

Coats shown at a New York fashion parade held recently, were outstanding for their clever cut and their lush colours and fabrics. The most prominent single feature, aside from the longer length, was the emphasis of flared backs. Most of the coats had graceful swinging folds falling from nedk to hemline. There was a noticeable trend toward a higher neckline, with proportionately smaller collar and often just one laTge decorative button for closing. Also noted was the return of the hood and the raglan sleeve.

Hand-painted materials have become popular overseas, and many beautiful designs have been created. A few of these materials have been . imported into New Zealand, and have been bought eagerly. Hand-painted material featured in a Wellington store recently was of Swiss organdie in about half-dozen robe lengths. The designs were pastel-shaded flowers on materials in pale shades. Some stores in Wellington are featuring hand-painted evening-, dinner and cocktail gowns. The work is being carried out by local artists'; It is stated that women like the added note of distinction hand-painted designs give to a frock, and these have become popular.
