Simple, Isn't It? "The English under crisis always amaze me. And, of course, the reason why the English under crisis amaze any observer is a simple enough one: the English enjoy a crisis. The £5 Note Tells a L 'e Few people in New Zealand whose financial status permits them to study a .£5 note for any length of time probably know that the scenic picture on the back is reproduced from a photograph of Lake Pukaki, with Mt. Cook and portion of : the Southern Alps in the background. Close inspection of this picture will reveal a small island in the foreground, grown iivtrees. How many people know that in actual fact that island is not there at all? But in justice te the engravers of the £5 note it should be explained that the mistake is not theirs. All the blame is taken by Ihe Public Works Department employees working on the dam project. Within the last six months the island has been completely buried by a huge quantity of spoil dug from the site of the sluices.
