Wanganui and South Island ports in addition to the Government supply ships which were constantly in port. Mr. Robert Afflick was signalman, whilst Captain Morrison of the A.C. Force was in charge of the Port. It was in this year that the present Main Road to the beach was constructed by the Opunake Town Board. Messrs Middleton Bros, purchased Bartlett's Hotel and store, and built a larger up-to-date Hotel on the site of the present Club Hotel. Bartlett's old building was dismantled, part of it being moved across the main street and some of it was destroyed by fire a little later on. The portion moved across the street was converted.to shops and older residents will remember, the two storied building in which "Shan O'Neill" had dinning Rooms, and beside it the shop where Mr. J. Feaver had his Chemists business. (These buildings were destroyed in the big fire of 1911.) (To be continued.)
