There’s tobacco, now. Isn’t three shillings a week rather much for you to be spending on that?” “Depends on the tobacco,” replied defendant. “There are some brands I wouldn’t give three bob a cartload for. But I don’t smoke ’em. See?” “What brands do you smoke?” enquired counsel. “New Zealand toasted Cavendish, if you want to know. No nicotine in it. The toasting takes it out. That’s why. My pipe is my only pleasure, and I can’t do with less than three bobs worth a week. See?” Counsel'didn’t press the point. Doubtless he smokes himself. New Zealand toasted tobacco is certainly seductive. It’s true that it contains no nicotine to speak of. And such a flavour and aroma!
