CAMERA CLUE

N.Z. POLICE ENTERPRISE ALLEGED BUEGLAE One of the most extraordinary photographs over taken is being cirdilated by New Zealand police in the search for a burglar who blew open and robbed a post office safe last month. The photograph has also been sent to Australia, where its pub lication aroused great interest.

Taken by an automatic camera specially set up by postal officials, the photograph shows a man, gloved and torch in hand, near the safe. The shutter was released by the breaking of a ray across the room, unknown to the alleged burglar, who, working with great care, left no other clues that might reveal his identity. Sydney detectives could not recall any Australian incident even remotely similar. Some Sydney firms have considered installing such photographic apparatus, but it has always been . considered an uneconomic venture, when the cost is considered beside the chances of it ever being "fired.” "It is certainly a million-to-one chance,’ - said a Sydney detective. At Fort Wayne (Indiana) this year a series of robberies was cleared up when a hidden camera photographed a 17-ycar-old youth. '

INTERPRETING THE TRUTH

A Supreme Court judge was trying to explain the niceties of tire difference between truth and untruth. He said that a witness was not necessarily untruthful because he altered a statement previously made. “For instance,” said the judge, “when 3 entered this •court to-day I could have sworn that I had my watch in my pocket. But then I remembered that I had left it in the bathroom at home."

When the judge reached home that night his wife said; “Why all the bother about your watch —sending four or five men for it?” “Good heavens!” exclaimed the judge. “I didn’t send any men. WBStt did you <Jof" “I gave it to the first man who came,” replied his wife. “He knew exactly where it WEfs.”
