"That must be a record," said a member at the FJlerslie Town Board meeting last night, when it was reported that the board's balance-sheet had not been "tagged" for 26 years. Two large plans of the proposed Town Hall will be on view in the window of the Opunake Times for the next few days. Language Problem in Court Difficulty was experienced in the Auckland Police Court recently in making a foreign seaman understand the meaning of a charge of ship desertion or of entering a plea. When Mr W. R. McKean, S.M., suggested obtaining the services of the Swedish Consul to act as interpreter, SubInspector Fox pointed out that accused was an Estonian. It was then reported that he might be. placed on an oil tanker due at Wellington next week, and when asked if he would consent to this accused said: "Sure." "Sure, you say," said the magistrate. "Very well, we shall try to make sure by keeping you for another week." Police Complimented

The alertness and efficiency of the police in carrying out their duties were twice commented on by Mr Justice* Callan when he was addressing the grand jury in the Supreme Court yesterday. One incident he referred to as reflecting great credit on the police occurred when a constable ,was searching an arrested man and noticed that he was chewing something. By poking the man's cheek, he got him to ejeict a pound note Avhich had a distinct bearing on the case. The other incident was when the occupants of a police night patrol car recognised the number of a stol»n car they saw, and by pursuing it arrested two men and recovered a quantity of stolen material.
