Attracting Nurses A decision to provide the cost of uniforms to first-year nurses in addition to the recent salary increase was made by the Hawke's Bay Hospital Board in an endeavour to alleviate the difficulty of obtaining pupil nurses to make up the required complement at the Napier Public Hospital. The matron, Miss L. M. Croft, reported to the board on tile question. The position now is that there are 85 nurses at Napier; that 102 will be required in October; and that 95 are; at present required.

The Price of a City The land on which Auckland now stands was bought at probably less than a shilling an acre, stated Professor J. Rutherford during a University extension lecture on early New Zealand and problems. The original deed of purchase of the site of Auckland relates to an area of land approximately 3000 acrels in extent, bounded roughly by Brighton Road, Remuera, Mount Eden and Cox's Creek. The price was £SO, 50 blankets, 20 pairs of trousers, 20 shirts, 10 waistcoats, 10 caps, 100 yards of gown pieces, four casks of tobacco, one box of pipes, 10 iron pots, one bag of sugar, and one of flour, and 20 hatchets.

A Useful Pound The extent to which (he eurrenices of Central Europe were depreciated in the immediate post-war years was illustrated by Mr P. W. Doidge when addressing the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Education Institute recently. Before leaving Vienna to travel to Budapest, Mr Doidge visited a bank for some Hungarian money and was told that all he could obtain was the equivalent of £l. He travelled 200 miles down the Danube, spent the night at the best hotel in Budapest, spent a day sightseeing with a guide, took two friends to a champagne lunch, returned to Vienna in a first-class sleeper, and still had some of his £1 left.
