LOCAL AND GENERAL

Footballers’ Matt. — The annual footballers’ mart will be held in the Main street to-morrow, when home-made cakes, preserves, vegetables, etc. will be on sale; Make your weekend purchases here.

Free Bus to Te Kiri.— On Thursday, October 31st., those intending being present at the Halloween at the Te Kiri Hall will be pleased to learn that Wiliamson’s parlour coach will run as a free bus. As a large crowd is anticipated, seats should be reserved at an eaily date.

Land and Income Tax.— The Commissioner of Taxes draws the attention of taxpayers to the notification appearing in to-day’s issue that the due date of payment of land-tax for Lie current year is on Thursday, the 7ih day of November 1935, and that the demands will be posted oa oi about the 31st day of October.

Beach Visiters. — There is every likelihood of a big influx of campers at the beach this season, several inquiries having reached us from outside sources. The arrangements at the camping ground are quite up to most places in the smaller resorts an i everything possible will be done to encourage visitors to stay in Opunake for the holiday season.

Improvements to Cresn. — The comfortable seats provided for visitors at the bowling green were appreciated on Wednesday when a big crowd of residents turned out to see the green opened. The new protection in front of the pavilion also served a useful purpose which will benefit the green as the season progresses. The rink numbers donated by Mr Parkes are neat in design and should last a long time. Influenza Prevalent. — A large number of people along the coast are suffering from influenza which has been spreading this way for a fortnight. The school attendances have been affected during the last week which is rather unfortunate in view of the proximity of examinations. No serious cases have been noted, but patients are advised to get under the blankets and stay there when threatened with this complaint.

AM-round Growth.— The close, muggy weather is proving voiy beneficial t(F the farmers and the grass is literally shooting up in all directions. At the present time the country throughout TaranaTcT is looking in great order and a fair sprinkle of rain between sunny days during the next three weeks should see the milk supply go up in leaps and bounds. Paddocks closed for hay are also looking well and good crops are anticipated.

The Milky Way.— We have read of the laud flowing with milk and honey and an incident which occurred in the main street yesterday morning at least puts Opunake in the running for the title. A local farmer, while driving his cart to the factory, had the misfortune to lose two cans full when the horse slipped on the roadway, dislodging the load into the gut tel. A stream of 40 (o 50 gallons of milk going to waste was hard to bear. The Beach Pavilion. — From to-morrow on, the Pavilion will be open daily iat the beach when dainty morning and afternoon tea will be procurable. The business has been taken over by Mr D. J. Peat, who will cater for the wants of all. The large dining room may be hired for dances, weddings or parties, while the catering for any of tin \se functions may be arranged at a reasonable rate. Special orange and lemon drinks for the children and ice cream for the multitude are procurable day and flight.

Railway Excursions.— So far, the Hail way Department has promised an excursion to Opuuake in February which many will agree with us is far too late in the season, most of the children having settled down to school work at the conclusion of (he holiday season. It is hoped that the Seaside Society will in. vite the Dejjartment to run at least two in January besides the one decided on. It is almost safe to predict a fine week-end throughout the first month of the New Year but later dates are too uncertain for such excursions.
