BOWLING SEASON OPENS

BIG CROWD PRESENT VISITORS WELCOMED Dame Fortune can be regarded U.s the Opunake Bowling Club’s •particular friend as far as hei grip of weather conditions is concerned and once again her smile favoured it for opening day after a morning bristling with portents of a really wet and windy ifternoon. Everything pointed to a record gathering, quite a number of clubs having signified their intention of being present, but up to 11 o’clock members were feeling very uncertain of the prospects. However, by mid-day, the sun broke through the clouds and everyhing and everybody took a net. lease of life with the result •hat the 1935-36 season opened auspiciously, the green being filled with bowlers from clubs from New Plymouth as. far south as \\ averley. A keen wind earlier in die afternoon made accurate play difficult, but later on the conditions were almost ideal and all pros, nt enjoyed a pleasant afternoon’s play. } The green was a trifle heavy as would naturally be expected, but ran truly. The grounds and hedges were in a spick and span condition which drew from visitors complimentary remarks on the amount of work put in by the greenwarden (Mr D. McCrone; and his fellow workers, while the alterations in the pavilion were noted as a further step in the right direction. President’s Remarks.

la declaring (he green open, Mr P. Dalrymple (president) extended a cordial welcome to the large number present and stated that it was very gratifying to see so many representatives from outside clubs. The fact that almost every club from New Plymouth to Waverley had membdrs present could be taken as an indication of the popularity of the Opunake club, and he hoped all would enjoy the day’s outing. The green would very likely be on the heavy side, but with the capable attention always accorded by their greenwarden, it would be in perfect order very soon. In preparing the playing area for opening day, he would like to thank those' who had assisted in any way to makingopening day successful and expressed hearty thanks to Miss E. Trotter for decorating the social room.

Most clubs seemed to be enjoying the fact that the membership was growing and the Opumake club was fortunate in having quite a few new enthusiasts. At the same time they were reminded of the fact that several pioneers of the game had left the ranks. Th? Hawera Club had suffered the loss of Messrs T. Corkill, Toll and .Tait, Kapouga, Mr R. Law and Eltham, Mr Phillips. The club’s sympathy was extended to the relatives and friends of the deceased. In conclusion, Mr Dalrymple referred to the club’s effort to held a one-day tourney on Labour Day'and solicited the support of those present to assist them in this respect. Mrs P. DaTymple then threw the first kitty of the season and Mr I. Judson, the oldest member of the club, bon led up the initial bowl. Mrs Dalrymple was presented with a bouquet by Mrs G. Hammond. Before commencing play, Mr E. Mason, vice-president of the Taranaki Centre returned thanks for the hearty welcome extended

and complimented the club on tin r amount of progress made during the past few years. He had been visiting Upunake for many year.? s and ou each visit something' extra had received attention, which spoke well for the interest taken in the club by officials and mem- ' bers alike. The tidiness of the section and the general appearance of the c üb’s headquarters had always struck him as beingworthy of special mention and all would join him in wishing Upuuake a most successful season. ’ During the afternoon a delici ous afternoon tea was provided by the ladies under the supervision of Mrs Dalrymple, the social room bearing evidence of feminine attention, bowls of flowers and gay streamers giving the room a pleasing appearance. At the conclusion of play, Mr
