RACING AT WELLINGTON

THE CUP CONTEST good fields cabbed Everything points to a most suucessftlßtLdure at Trentham next weef when the summer meeting .will commence on luesdav next. The fields are all good and contain a majority o± tne l, f s'., horses racing xu the Dominion at present. . The chief event is the 6~ud W ellingto.’i Cup, which lias drawn a field of 14 tried performer, rl' of whom should go to the post. Vintage has been allotted pride of place and if successful «t the weight will prove what many alreadv class him, a champion. Everything is in readiness tor accommodating a record C J j

and, as usual, the meeting should prove popular with Taranakians. Given fine weather, new records should be set at Trentham, both by performers and totalisator figures, the smooth running o x tures at this course always beiug patronised by the bigges ■ porters of the “sport of kings who are enabled by the ingenious betting facilities, to know at a glance the position of the horse in which they are particularly interested. , . All parts of the Dominion are represented in the various events and the prize money should be fairly evenly distributed. The acceptances and a lew brief notes on the form are given below;— Trentham Highweight Handicap One Mile.

Red Rufus 10.8, Hu ere Tonu 10.5, Dombey IU.o, Tbe Ark 10.3 Bold Jim 10.2, Yerdeu 10.0, Revision 10.0, Umpire 9.12, Knockout 9 10, I’alatiuate 9.10, Round Score 9.9, Hot Stuff 9.3, Wino 9.3, Utauru King 9.0, Purse 9.0. "'Several of the above have shown good form over the holidays, Haere Tonu being in great fettle early but falling off a little. Revision showed up well at Stratford and Yerdeu at Auckland. The solid weights will play up with several lower down and peihaps the best to follow will be THE ABK—BOLD JIM

Apprentices’ Plate —7 furlongs Heather Glow, Hunting Bag, Jubilee Song, Cawbeeu, Tupurangi. Capital, Dark Red, Fersen, Gay Boy, Hostis, Back Thrust, Dialogist, Horotia, Palm. Hunting Bay can see out a seven furlongs at a solid pace, but has stronger opposition than at Auckland. Fersen has started .bff well and the win at Stratford on the first day was impressive. Several have little to recommend them and the public may wait to see the riders selected before making a selection. Two good ones are — CAWBEEH—FERSEN Fitzherbsrt Handicap. Five furlongs. Kotou 8.0, Ulchemic 7.12, Corroboree 7.12, Heritage 7.11, Fulojoy 7.7, Going Gay 7.5, Nightlass 7.3, Shirley Dene 7.0. The above are not a very select lot and anything may bob up to collect the thick end of the stake. Heritage is a very well bred com |>etitor who will gain support on this alone and Going Gay must be given a fair chance. Recent running points to the bulk of the investments going in favour of — KOTOU—CORROBOREE

Wellington Gup. One mile and a-haif. Vintage 9.9, Cray Marigold 8.5, Grand Jury 8,4, lied Manfred 8.3 Spiral 7.12, Cuddle 7.10, Toute le Monde 7.7, Caliente, Red Sun, Rocket, Royal Artist, Silver Sight 7.0. Due to the impressive display at Auckland, Vintage has been allotted top weight in this event and will probably be the elect oi the public. Many are of the opinion that Vintage _ suffered more than any horse in the trouble w hich took place during the running of the Auckland Cup, and this undoubtedly affected his chances. Gay Marigold is an honest sort and has been accepted for in preference to the stable mate, King March. She has beaten Vintage at closer weights, and if in the good form shown at will probably extend the field. Grand Jury was the unlucky horse of the Auckland Cup race and, though soundly beaten hv Vintage in tl,ie A.R.C. Handicap, lie is expected to display improved form on the Trentham track, for which he has shown a partiality in the past. Red Manfred seems to be slipping and Cuddle will not be troubled by the distance, hte former having put up some fine track performantes recently. Toute le Monde has disappointed too often lately io deserve much support, but Caliente is the game little horse to upset the whole barrow load. She will carry a lot of support from the North and should be with the leaders when the final dash for home is made. Red Sun, Rocket, Royal Artist and Silver Sight are on weights ■which gives them a chance to see out the distance. The only one with a moderate chance is Rocket who was well in the hunt in the Auckland Cup (2 miles) when the last 100 yards was undeijJen. The shorter distance ma4RK suitable. Favourites have noT won this event very often, hut on this occasion it seems probable that they will figure prominently when the numbers go up and the public may feel inclined to favour the chances of — VINTAGE - CAY MARIGOLD

Ruapehu Hack Handicap Six funongs. Beau Gallante 9.4, Colossiau 9.1, Friesland 8.8, Brown Betty 8.(, Tuuueller 8.2, invoice 8.2, Travenua 7.13, Moonbeam 7.11, Urby’s Last 7.11, Coieusq 7.7, Silly Owl 7.7, tup Bearer 7.0, State Bank 7.3, Sunee 7.3, Epris 7.2, Arouse 7.0, Love in the Mist 7.0.

Some smart hacks will face the barrier in this ev«it, many of them having recent form to recommend them. Moonbeam is a likely sort and Invoice is on the improve fust. Tunneller won on this course last month, but failed at Auckland. In the lowej weights, Arouse is very well treat ed and will have mauy r friends. The most support may come for FRIESLAND—COLOSSI AN Telegraph Handicap. Six furlongs. Autopay 9.4, Diatomous 8.13, Silver Streak 8.7, Rereatu 8.3, Princess Doreen 8.2 Wheriko 7.13, Cranford 7,12, Lucidus T.B, Star Artist 7.8, Namakia, Guarantee 7.0. This race is a poser, some ot the crack sprinters being on the list. Autopay is by no means a back number as he recently proved at Awapuui. Silver Streak is back to form and will be hard, while Star Artist is perhaps the likely one among those lower down. Namakia was greatly boomed for the Railway Handicap, but failed to materialise and Cranford seems to have lost the dash of six miuths ago. Princess Doreen galloped very consistently over the holidays and will go well. The public fancy may include—■ DIATOMOUS— WHERIKO Anniversary Handicap, One Mile. Fracas 9.5, Kamal Pasha 9.1, Some Shamble 9.0, Cherry King 8.12, Great Star 8.11, Cyclonic 8.5, Horowheuuu 8.4, Aiguille 8.2, Trivet 8.0, Cardinal Moon 8.0. Un holiday running, the top weight should have this race set, though some opposition may come from Kemal Pasha and Cardinal Moon. Cherry King seems to he a second day horse, otherwise he would be our first choice. The favourites however wilFprobablv be — FRACAS—CHERRY KING Wellington Stakes, Five furlongs. Colombo, Emissary, Burnish, Limulus, Mother Superior, Silver wings, Variant, Galilee, Abdication, Debliam, II Dnce, Bun Fight, Pakanui, Penelope, Severe.

Some smart horses appear in this event which should provide some spirited investments on the machine. Eevrything has a chance over this distance, but on Auckland running, Galilee will be the one favoured. Burnish and Penelope are coming nicely while Bun Fight i s a hit above tlie ordinary. Post position will count a lot. Two real good ones aregaljllee—variant
