(By “Stymie.”) X A feature of recent play has been the consolation handicap for a trophy donated by members of the committee. In the first round • Hooker and Downey had a great struggle the former just manag, ing to win on the last green. Both* 1 showed good form. * • » « In the second round Hooker, in receipt of four strokes from Fouhy was defeated on the last green in another very interesting match. Although eliminated both Downey and Hooker played very well for beginners and the match play experience gained should be of great value to them.

In another second round match Peat defeated McCrone on the last green 1 up. This match was very closely contested and both went round in 99’s, good scoring for beginners. McCrone is the more versatile player of these two and he played some very good golf. Peat drives well and with mashie practice, should be hard to beat in the consolation final. • * « • A feature of these games is that every match so far has been decided on the last green, a striking indication of good play and evenness of golfing ability. Any player defeated on the last green can console himself with the fact that he is very little, if any, inferior to his opponent.. The consolation handicap is proving most interesting, besides giving beginners an opportunity of obtaining experience in match play. * * « « The “Bobby Jones” pictures on short approaches was a revelation and his manner of instruction was very good. It was wonderful to see his approach shots, in some cases going into the holes and in others a few inches from the hole. Those looking for hints to _ improve , their play sould not weekly features. ■< j * * \ If the weather iswfavouiable, several important matches will be decided during the week-end, and it is possible that the senior ladies and men’s championships will be decided.
